PUPPY lovers are being asked to foster young pooches to help a growing charity.

Dogs for the Disabled is urgently appealing for volunteer puppy socialisers in the Gloucester and Cheltenham area.

The charity needs patient, dog-loving volunteers to look after an eight-week-old puppy for the first 12-14 months of its life and teach basic skills including walking on a lead, sit, down, wait and stay.

Puppy socialisers also have a vital role in introducing them to locations including supermarkets, schools, hospitals, dentists, buses and trains as well as parks and other people's homes to prepare them for their working life.

Volunteers, who should have a secure garden, will attend monthly puppy classes.

Puppy co-ordinator Julia Winters said: "We're entirely dependent on our volunteer socialisers to give our puppies the right start.

"Their time and effort is invaluable and prepares our puppies for their advanced training."

There are currently 80 puppy socialisers across the country.

To become one of them call 01295 252600 or visit the website at www.dogsforthedisabled.org.

“We are a puppy socialising family in Gloucester for the charity and have been since September last year. This is a great charity to support and you come out of it knowing that you have made someone's life that much better by helping them lead a more normal life. We have Prince, a Golden Retriever at the moment and he is such a great dog to have around we know he will make someone very happy. If you can spare the time then go for it!, we were nervous but Julia soon put us at ease and we have the charities full support all the way.
