Quedgeley pub to get a new name
A PUB in Quedgeley is set for a £500,000 makeover.
The Weavers Arms, in Bristol Road, is closing on Sunday, March 14 to undergo a £500,000 refurbishment, turning it into a pub-restaurant.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE: The Weavers Arm, in Quedgeley. Inset: John Constable's The Hay Wain.
The pub will be renamed The Hay Wain after John Constable's famous painting, which is based on a scene of the River Stour in Suffolk a few hundred miles from Gloucestershire.
The pub was originally called The Basket Maker when it was built and opened by Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries in 1985.
Following a refurbishment in 2001, the pub's name was changed to The Weavers Arms.
The new-look pub will open up again in April.
Gloucester City Councillor Debbie Llewellyn (Con, Quedgeley Fieldcourt) is pleased to see the pub getting a new lease of life.
She said: "I am delighted that someone is investing in the pub and I am all for anything that will benefit the community. We want a nice family pub for everyone to enjoy.
"I am slightly disappointed though that we won't have the local link with the name, it would have been nice to keep that."
Anna Mozol, vice chairman of Quedgeley Parish Council, is looking forward to seeing the pub renovated.
She said: "It is a bit run down at the moment so it is good to see someone investing in it.
"We have got The Orchard and The Harvester already in Quedgeley but it's great news that we are getting a similar business, they bring people into the area.
"I don't know where they got the new name from though. It's called the Weavers because of the local link with a basket maker, but I've never heard of The Hay Wain."
Residents' opinions on the new name varied.
Dave Summerhayes, of Waterwells estate, said: "It doesn't really matter what it's called at the end of the day.
"As long as it is good pub or a restaurant."
Jon Robertson, 29, from Gloucester, has been into the pub a few times in the past.
He said: "I would like to see the name kept traditional to be honest, they should just leave it as it is."
Sandra Hughes, from Quedgeley, said: "I would like to see it go back to being called The Basket Maker as it was before.
"It is great news that someone is investing in it though."
Gemma Hopwood, from Kingsway, said: "There might not be a local link with the new name but I don't think that matters.
"The area is changing and I don't see why the name should maintain a link to Quedgeley."
Karen Allen has been living in Quedgeley for 18 months. She said: "I have got no objection to the new name at all, I don't think it matters at all what it is called."
Vicky Tighe, of Quedgeley, said: "I can see why they are changing the name, a lot of new companies do don't they?"
The outgoing landlord of the Weavers Arms and pub owners Marton's declined to comment.

“Has nobody mentioned that this is a world cup year. Why are less and less pubs showing sport.
How are we supposed to be patriotic and show support for our football team (our country) if we have no places for people to support together.
Its times like this where community spirit comes together and hopefully a lot of national pride.”

“Once again another TIG article gets hijacked by the Quedgeley vs Kingsway vs Tuffley vs Hardwicke my area is better than yours argument. What a bunch of losers you all are, get back to the school play ground.
Wake me up when it's over.

“How much did your studio flat in benefits land AKA Quedgley cost Gilley? I bet you live above the fish & chip shop, using your PAYG phone to post comments on here.”

“Kingsway is so undesireable that it has the cheapest property prices in the county
Hmm, I think the SOLD properties in the new area that cost £220,000 might dispel your little "fact" there Gilly.”

“The best thing they can do is to bring back Gary! He knew how to run the Weavers. It should be put back to how it was with a bar and a lounge. As for Emmas comments about the unfriendly social club...I have a great time in there and enjoy the company of some good people. Gilley...just because you are moving!!!!!”

“"Kingsway and Green farm are the only 2 decent areas, the only problems are caused by the little brats from Quedgeley areas like Overbrook road who get bored of hanging around outside Aldi and Tesco and decide to come to Kingsway or green farm and congregate there."
Never a truer word spoken! But don't forget those annoying teens who decide to drive through the underpass on their mopeds at 1am. The 2 lads I regularly see doing that both live in... Podsmead!
Hopefully they'll get bored soon and decide to annoy another new area, Talking of which, I hear Brockworth's newest estate are now receiving the same treatment!
As for the pub, a decent sports bar would be good..And how long are we in Kingsway supposed to wait for our "pubs and shops" to be open?”

“The comments on here are always so far fetched its ridiculous, the Weavers is ok. I wouldn't say it was great but as a local pub I've seen far, far worse. I look forward to seeing what it will be like after the change.
The whole Quedgeley/Kingsway bashing thing is boring by the way. Kingsway is on our door step, I walk through it every day to catch the 14 to work and the area is nice and the people friendly. They are getting the same rubbish spouted that my area of Tuffley did/still does. Nice new houses = people getting jealous and starting false rumours. Quedgeley however does have some undesirable areas, but on the whole is a nice area also.”

“We have already got The Orchard and The Harvester in Quedgeley,so why the hell do we have to do away with another traditional pub?

“Gilley, get your head out of the clouds son. The majority of Quedgeley is a dump.
Kingsway and Green farm are the only 2 decent areas, the only problems are caused by the little brats from Quedgeley areas like Overbrook road who get bored of hanging around outside Aldi and Tesco and decide to come to Kingsway or green farm and congregate there.”
