Since being elected in 1997, the south west by-pass was built, schools have been refurbished, the shopping centre was only just emerging and children centres didn't exist.

Jackie also served a four-year stint on Gloucester City Council from 2001.

And by 2005, Jackie was elevated to become the councillor responsible for the county's education provision.

She said: "Over the years I've presided over the rebuilding of a number of the county's schools. I've also had to take the unenviable task of closing some.

"In recent years the work has been challenging as we grapple with ever-shrinking budgets and a greater call in those areas of social care, especially for the elderly."

And Jackie couldn't sign off without paying tribute to the people who have helped her along the way.

"I have many people to thank for their help and support over the years. The list is endless," she said.

“If she was the counciller for the Quedgeley Free State... I've never seen her before. But then again, I've only been living there for 12 years...”

“Bit of a cheek trying to take credit for the family centres that began to be established by the labour government in 1997 Jackie. Even cheekier considering the swingeing cuts to family centre funding and opening hours made by your tory administration in Shire Hall. There are lots of incompetence issues in education provision at the moment. It's all very well getting a developer to pay for a new school on an estate but if the school isn't big enough the community is short changed despite the department getting a so called "freebie". Doing things on the cheap may be a quick fix and keep developers happy but it doesn't do our kids any favours. Enjoy your retirement!”
