The goods left by forgetful hotel guests are either returned by post or stored in lost property boxes.

Lauren Smith, deputy general manager at the Holiday Inn Express in Dunalley Street, Cheltenham, said they most commonly found clothes and sometimes cash, although they did get several "odd items."

She said: "We found a full length mirror once, which is quite weird.

"Someone obviously also bought their own shower head. I don't really know why."

Staff at the George Hotel on St George's Road in Cheltenham have stories about countless clothes left behind.

One of their visitors even managed to leave a whole wardrobe of clothes behind, but only one shoe.

Albertina Smith from the London Inn in London Road, Charlton Kings, said copies of Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code were among the most popular books found.

Over at Butlers on Western Road, cleaning staff found a Nikon camera costing "hundred of pounds" had been left by a customer from Switzerland.

Bosses at Bridge House Hotel on Lansdown Road said they once found cocaine under a mattress.

Jade Jackson-Newman from Ellenborough Park Hotel said they normally find hats, umbrellas, swim wear and coats.

She said: "The race-going crowd leave behind quite a lot of things."

Our survey comes after a national hotel chain Travelodge revealed about 7,000 copies of Fifty Shades of Grey had been left in its hotels in just a year.

The national survey found the fictitious trilogies dominated its top 10 books left behind.

E L James's Fifty Shades series, together with Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games were both in the top 10.

Shakila Ahmed, a spokeswoman for Travelodge, said: "Customers cannot get enough of Fifty Shades, and they are even reading the book while eating breakfast and dinner."

Over the last 12 months, more than 21,000 books have been left behind in Travelodge's 36,500 rooms.
