RACING driver Alice Powell, pictured, was last week invited to India on a UK trade mission by Prime Minister David Cameron. Here the 20-year-old former Cotswold School pupil, who aims one day to compete in Formula One, talks to The Business about her three-day experience.

I only received the call from Number 10 four days before the trip was due to leave to India, telling me that David Cameron had recommended that I come along as one of the delegates. That was not enough time for the excitement to set in before I left.

I arrived in India, along with Mr Cameron and the other 100 delegates, at about 8.30am Indian time Monday. From there, we had a police escort straight to Unliever, where Mr Cameron gave us delegates an introduction to the trip and thanked us for coming. It was at this point that I realised how fortunate I was to have such a fantastic opportunity to come on such an important mission, not just for Great Britain, but possibly for my racing career as well.

The rest of Monday consisted of several talks, held by Mr Cameron, to many other important business leaders in India. In the evening we visited the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalays Museum, where BP hosted a networking event. Tuesday was pretty much the same, apart from in the evening the British High Commission hosted a party to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (an early birthday party). Here, again, Mr Cameron made a brilliant speech in front of over 2,000 guests. On the final day, I was selected, along with only 24 other delegates, to go with the PM to the Golden Temple and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre site. I learnt so much on this trip and met many great people. I felt I achieved my aim, which was to do plenty of networking, but also to promote my current sponsors, British Motorsport and also women in sport too. I would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Cameron and the UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) team for the invite and such an outstanding trip. My aim now is to build on what I have learnt and build on the contacts I have made.
