Rare dogs brought in to help Gloucester security firm
SECURITY specialists in Gloucester are using a rare breed of Spanish dog to help with their protection duties across the UK.
Jon Humphries-Cuff, 32, imported Havana and Rubio from Gran Canaria and Tenerife to join his Cuff Group security team.

The Presa Canario breed are perfect defensive dogs, he said, as they guard their pups with their life in the wild and are used in the US to guard against terrorism and help protect celebrities.
"These dogs are gentle and kind by nature but are brilliant defence animals," said Mr Humphries-Cuff.

“First of all K9Securities is my job title not the company I work for.
In answer to your question Mr Cuff the competition I went to was "Search, Track & Drugs" which is open to police & security dogs, there is as you can see 3 different eliminates in this competition, I came first in search with my GSD Max, first in tracking with my Bloodhound Harry & second in drugs round with my beagle Ruby, I achieved 300 out of 330 points, making me the over all winner for the 8th time running. (as you can see I have 3 security dogs, as each dog as his/her own purpose which are GSD search/guarding duties, my Bloodhound finding runaways, missing people etc & my Beagle is used for finding drugs)
All the information I previously written is true in the country I live in which is Scotland, but after talking to my colleagues at the competition, I have been told that it's not the case in England, I have been told England are very lax on rules when it comes to security dogs,
So I do owe you an apology Mr Cuff, over you being able to use Presa Canario as security dogs,
we have very strict rules & regulation in Scotland concerning security dogs, one of them being we can only use the dogs that I listed previously, however I was right as I stated previously, as Presa Canario dogs are banned from coming into Scotland & any Presa Canario dogs already living in Scotland Must be over 2 years old, be tattooed, chipped & must be registered on the dangerous dog list hold at their local sheriff's office, also Presa Canario dogs are banned like Pitbulls in some parts of the USA & some parts of Canada as well.
This story was cross reference to Scotland security Weekly & Scotland S***** forum, that is how I came across it, but as this story is related to England only & does not concern Scotland, I am now bowing out.
Will had that all info I put up over the last few days, came from the booklet I received with my renewed 5 year K9 security handler SIA licence & not from the Internet.”

“Thanks Kay,
I agree but we can only provide correct info and guidance for others to find out for themselves. its unfortunate that people put false statements but hey, it gives me an opportunity to bring some truth to the questions ask, which I think I have been upfront enough to answer.”

“Hi Cheesechaser,
I couldn't agree more, they are very dangerous not even in the wrong hands but even to those who do not understand them. They have a huge amount of defence drive which you rightly say in the wrong hands could be sent the wrong way and be dangerous. The important thing is to build lots of control with the dog as a puppy so that they are very responsive and come alive only when you tell them too. The Presa Canario is very chilled out otherwise which makes them perfect for guarding work, or at least for the requirements I require. I don't need a high drive, or high prey drive dog that wants to chase things or people. A calm dog with an intimidating stature with a strong defence which protects our guards and keys.
As a company we don't want our dogs to bite, the dogs are there as a deterrent. Someone asked why do I not use old fashioned GSD. They are great for sport they just have a lot of attributes I don't need, like tracking, prey drive, agility to jump obstacles. I don't need this in my opinion, I think the problem here is some companies think that they should use the same dog(s) as the police for protection. Police do a different job than security, the police search for people and move groups on etc. Security companies guard premises, we don't chase people, thats why I use this dog as in "my opinion" this dog is functional for what I ask my guards to do and that is guard and for them to be protected. However, I am not saying the GSD is not good at doing Protection(before you jump down my throat) I'm saying the presa canario in my opinion is better at guarding that is what they are bred for.
I also see this as a competitive advantage as who remembers the company that does the same as everyone else. I personally feel I can provide a better dog for the purpose it is being put to. e.g a 4 x 4 would be better driving on mud but if you needed a vehicle that wasn't needed for rough terrain would you choice a 4x4 probably not, you would buy something functional for your everyday lifestyle.
This is the same strategy we use for our whole operation, we look at things on a purpose basis what are we trying to provide without being vague like we provide "security guards" we provide security guards but for what? what are they expected to do? how do we provide a better service? this question can only be answered when you know what it is you are trying to provide. I look for the best attributes for only the job they are required to do which is differentiation. Nothing is perfect but you can find something near perfect for a specific job!
Hope this answers everyones questions.”

“I'm glad that homes will be vetted. In the wrong hands they can be a dangerous dog - in the right hands a wonderfull dog.
I am not breed-bashing, I have a soft-spot for molossors, owning an English Mastiff myself.
For those complaining that this man is bringing in dogs like this to our country - Pressas have been bred in the UK for several years.
The Pressa is a gorgeous looking dog (much better not cropped - no need for that horrid mutilation) that needs an owner that understands what they are taking on, as with all dogs, but especially the naturaly protective guards.”

“You are not answering any of my questions?? I am sure you are interested but you hold no reasonable argument to what you are saying, its just plain nonsense... Again with these statements the GSD would be wiped out too then as they have bitten more than enough people!
You switch between motivations for the reason for posting, one minute they are on dangerous dogs list (false) then they are not on a list of dogs that are able to be used for security (false) now because you are worried that they will be put to sleep. Oh and not to mention that they are not old fashioned "majority" choice.
Own a true Presa Canario yourself then come back to the comment board with some experience of the breed, you may answer your own question.”

“Mr Cuff I said I phoned the BKC, EUKC & AKC, I never said anything about the Kennel Club ?????
As I am now going away for a few days for a security dog competition (which I have won for the past 7 years) so I will be missing all the negative response's but will look forwards to read them up on my return.”

“Mr Cuff I am interested to why you have had Presa Canario dogs & not dogs thats on the Security list ? & why did you go to the paper with your story about using Presa Canario dogs ?
ms78glos all you have to do is contact the Security governing body they will only be to please to give you the info you require about which dogs are & which dogs are not allowed to be used.
sianjen24 you seem to not bothered to read what I put! as I said I WORK FOR A SECURITY COMPANY NOT OWN ONE there's a big difference.
I am not bitter about Mr Cuff using Presa Canario dogs, I am just concern that they will be the next dog that will be force to be PUT TO SLEEP by the courts like poor Lennox is
http://tinyurl.com/buwmwwf
I am wondering just how many of the people jumping on the bandwagon, that think they know all about security dogs, actually own a dog themselves, also what type of dogs they own or have owned ? I have owned Rottweiler's, Doberman's, GSD's, Pitbulls', Japanese Akita's, Siberian Huskies & now I have 8 beautiful Staffies.
BSL if given their own way will have all dog breeds, that have ever bitten anyone wiped off this earth.”

“To go on from this for those who are interested there is no such law passed in 2005. DEFRA would be the obvious answer to those laws as they would be involved in writing those laws. Guess what a simple google search provides no information on this made up law. I don't know what more to say, there is no evidence to this.”

“BKC is now known as the KC (Kennel Club) who do not deal with this info "what dogs are allowed as security dogs" they are the registration company for dogs. I just called them and they laughed saying I think someone is ill informed. AKC are pretty much the same but in the US (American Kennel Club). I have personally spoken to the registration team in ST Louis in December of last year. Funnily enough I registered one of my dogs with them!!
If you have this ruling back in 2005 then post link of the rule.
If you have information regarding dogs that are not allowed to be used then back up with evidence as your word has already been proven wrong by "HARD FACT".”
