REAL ale and cafe culture are set to breathe new life into two Stroud hostelries.

Bar Nine in John Street is expected to reopen by the end of the month as The Ale House, while The Greyhound Inn in Gloucester Street is being readied for use as a cafe bar.

Real ale expert Nigel Crofts is beavering away on the former Bar Nine building in John Street.

"We are aiming for 12 pumps on the bar, of mainly local ales, and guest ales," said Nigel, whose many pubs have been in the Good Beer Guide since 1985.

He ran the White Horse in Hertford for 10 years before to moving to Stroud.

"We're not tied to a brewery, and we will be doing good, basic food but we won't be a gastro pub," he said.

"I want the pub to be comfortable and welcoming, where the art of conversation rules."

His Irish Wolfhound Finbar is never far away and is unlikely to shift from one of three open fires Nigel is trying to recommission.

Local lagers, wines, ciders and soft drinks will be available. The pub has been for sale for around two years, while the Greyhound closed three years ago.

It is set to reopen as a cafe bar, and like Nigel, is advertising for staff.
