Bryan Redpath: There's still plenty for Gloucester to work on

GLOUCESTER head coach Bryan Redpath refused to get carried away with his side's 26-6 win over the Scarlets at Kingsholm.

In their first run-out of the season on Saturday, the Cherry and Whites were not made to work too hard against a poor Welsh team who were missing a number of their regular players.

But the Scot was pleased his side managed to stop the Magners League side from breaching their try-line, with defence high on his list of priorities this summer.

"On the whole I am fairly upbeat, there is no point getting excited about it, but I think the 'no tries' thing was important for us," said Redpath.

"Defensively we conceded no tries and we were fairly solid.

"Yes, we had little lapses and little mistakes but on the whole I'm happy.

"We never kicked at goal once we decided to play, just to test our contact area.

"We can be fairly happy and be pretty critical and we will get back to work on Monday."

Despite the relative comfort Gloucester enjoyed in strolling past the Scarlets after scoring four tries, Redpath said there was plenty to work on.

The skill set from both teams was poor, which is to be expected as players try to dust off the cobwebs of a long pre-season.

And Redpath said he wanted to see more conviction in the tackles from his players.

"We need to get a bit more bite in our one-on-one hits and collisions and if we get that we might get a couple more turnovers," he added.

"The turnovers we got were generally on the further outside edges, so on the whole I was fairly happy."

The only sour note from the game was Lesley Vainikolo leaving the field with a jarred shoulder on 37 minutes, but Redpath said it was just precautionary.

"He jarred his shoulder when he fell down on his elbow," he said. "He has just jarred it, I do not think it is anything major.

"He was pretty chirpy, so I do not see it as a big issue, but there is no point taking any risks either."

“Brian Redpath is right not to get carried away. That was a vastly inexperienced Scarlets' side.

It was an encouraging start with some obvious areas to work on. The penalty count in the last 15 minutes could prove to be disastrous in a fully competitive game.

On the whole, well done Gloucester Rugby!”
