Gloucester Rugby: Bryan Redpath wants awayday focus at Exeter
GLOUCESTER will field as close to a full strength side as possible for their opening match of the 2010-11 Aviva Premiership against Exeter at Sandy Park today.
The match will be a landmark moment in the history of the Devon outfit as it is their first-ever game in the top flight after clinching promotion from the Championship in May.
But they will come up against an experienced Cherry and Whites side, with head coach Bryan Redpath able to welcome back several key players who were used sparingly in pre-season.
Skipper Mike Tindall will lead the side after recovering from a tight hamstring, while fly-half Nicky Robinson is fit again after playing just 30 minutes in pre-season due to a calf problem.
Only young full-back/fly-half Freddie Burns, prop Paul Doran-Jones and new lock Jim Hamilton are missing from the matchday 23 because of injury.
Bryan Redpath's side have enjoyed a promising summer campaign following wins over the Scarlets and the Ospreys, coupled with a defeat to Munster.
And Redpath says the trips to the Liberty Stadium and Musgrave Park to face the Magners League teams have prepared his side perfectly for the journey to Exeter.
"It's why we played Ospreys and Munster away – two challenging grounds," said the Scot.
"It will be a great atmosphere and huge credit to Exeter for what they've achieved.
"We've got to focus properly. The big challenge is our away form.
"We need to get our head around that and today is when it starts.
"We have to make sure that we are mentally tough for the game."
The Chiefs have recruited swiftly to strengthen their squad in preparation for the new season and there is sure to be a lively and passionate atmosphere come 3pm.
Gloucester's only defeat on the opening weekend of a new Premiership season since 2000/01 was a 20-8 loss at home to Leicester in 2008.
The two clubs have met just twice before in competitive rugby, both times at Kingsholm, with Gloucester victorious on both occasions.
First was a 34-3 win in the fourth round of the John Player Cup in February 1982 and then a 35-6 victory in the Powergen Cup in 2002.
Team: O Morgan; J Simpson-Daniel, M Tindall (capt), E Fuimaono-Sapolu, L Vainikolo; N Robinson, D Lewis; N Wood, S Lawson, P Capdevielle; D Attwood, A Brown; P Buxton, A Qera, L Narraway. Replacements: O Azam, A Dickinson, R Harden, W James, A Strokosch, J Pasqualin, T Taylor, T Molenaar.

“Well done Neil for getting right to the nub of the matter. The club can go right down the plug-hole but God forbid that any supporter should get disillusioned about what is going on.”

“What we should be doing is writing to the wonderful Mr. Guscot and asking him what to do. With his experience and knowledge of the game, I am sure he will be able to give us some great advice. If only he was a boy from the valleys I would worship the ground he walks on.”

“No doubt Neil, Longlevens, from his high & mighty position, thinks of himself as a superior supporter and anyone else who expresses themselves differently to him, is not a real supporter. Idiot!”

“So after one game some so called supporters are already offering their season tickets for sale. You'll no doubt be the same guys cheering Gloucester on against Leeds next week. Most true supporters of GRFC would really be pleased if you stayed away for good!”

“No wonder that the "Comments" facility has been removed from the news item of the pathetic loss of ten points by this pathetic team run by a pathetic manager. "Experienced team"? experienced at losing maybe, but this is certainly not a premiership team woth watching anymore.”

“A totally pathetic display from the complacent overpaid and over here.
I whish I'd have gone to Stratford races instead, at least there most of the competitors are trying. Anyone looking for a cheap season ticket because anymore of this rubbish and mine's going on Ebay with a 99p start.”

“Despite the poor display of basic skills (the knock-ons and the forward passes) we could have still won that game if only we had a reliable kicker. They, on the other hand, only really threatened our line once (their try) but they had a kicker that kept the scoreboard ticking over. You could see the belief building in their team as, time and time again, they scored. At the same time, they (team and supporters) could see our kicker was never going to score in a month of Sundays... and our team knew it too. Belief and the will to win are just as important as skill.
This is not finger pointing at Nicky Robinson, who is, in my opinion, a fine player and who, on his day, can be a good kicker. The problem is with those who can make the decisions and are clearly not doing so. Take yesterday; why was no decision taken to change the kicker? There was an alternative on the pitch for most of the game. Who is tasked with making that call? Is it the captain? Surely the head coach can intervene if the captain is doing nothing.
Yesterday is not the first time we have been let down by kicking (though it is probably the worst). Through Henry Paul, Ryan lamb and now Nicky Robinson, I have never felt confident with our goal kickers¿ abilities. I have to re-iterate, this is not a Nicky Robinson bashing exercise, but it was known when we signed him that he was fragile as a kicker; that is why he wasn't the first choice at Cardiff. At Gloucester, we knew that we hadn't had a decent goal kicker since Mercier but the decision makers did nothing about it when the opportunity arose.
So what is to be done? Presumably Nicky practices his kicking but I don¿t believe that is the problem anyway. Maybe we could bring in a kicking guru to iron out any problems/change his action but who knows if that will work, and can we even afford it? The only thing to do is to ensure that there is an alternative on the field, i.e. Burns or Taylor or drop Robinson. If we have Robinson with Burns or Taylor on the pitch at the same time, then someone needs to drop out, i.e. Morgan. In fact, because of Morgan¿s injury record, that is going to happen anyway.
...And Morgan, his injury record and lack of decent cover at 15 is a whole new gripe where we have been let down by the decision makers.”

“Whatever was expected... it definitely was not what we got. The only plus was the excellent turn out of Gloucester fans”

“He hasn't! I've seen more gel on many a gormless spotty youth hanging around the city centre.
How many forward passes were Gloucester called for today? Where were the basic skills? Do we have enough coaches to hone these skills?
I expect someone's job may well soon be on the line here, and I don't think it's fair. What has happened to the fix that was identified from the review held before last season? It has just disappeared like any chance of making the top 4 this season.”

“That is a strong starting line-up with a good set of players on the bench. Man for man we have a better squad; however, it's a team game and Bryan needs to get them gelling as a team. Let's hope he has.”
