Republic will no longer accept vouchers
CLOTHING retailer Republic is no longer accepting gift vouchers after going into administration.

News of its financial troubles first emerged two weeks ago and it said up to half its stores could be shut.
On Wednesday, Ernst & Young was appointed administrator.

A spokeswoman said stores will continue to trade with a view to selling the business as a going concern.
She said: "Vouchers have been suspended while we assess the financial position."
The company has 2,500 employees and 150 people from its Leeds head office have been made redundant.

“I cannot see why vouchers are given as presents anyway. The way I look at it is, if you are given a voucher (which has been bought by something called money), you can spend that voucher in that business only (or can't in this case). If you had cash, you can spend it anywhere. The Chinese version of gift vouchers is lucky money given out in red envelopes. Who has it right?”

“I've just read other comments and I think it depends upon circumstances. I took back a coat, over £100 in value as it had fallen apart at the seams, literally. They didn't have another in my size, I was refused my request that they order me one and I go to collect it, they also said I couldn't have my money back but store credit was ok, fine considering i would of gone back for another coat.... Not so fine now I have a worthless card”

“Well thank you very much republic for offering me vouchers the day before! My gift card is very useful now isn't it! Most expensive toothpick? Table steadier? .... Any other suggestions?”

“@honslknjklyt - you're quite right.
When I was a kid my mum used to do the same with Park Hampers, and even as a child I knew the money would be better spent on a savings account, with real money available. Exactly how many people lost cash with Farepak, and how long ago?
Gift vouchers are a lazy way of giving, as well as a dangerous one. Don't blame the system for your inability or laziness when choosing a present.”

“All these people who moan about gift vouchers and all the "I'm being rippped off", simples - don't buy them and if you end up getting one, spend it immediately and ask relatives never to buy you a gift voucher again.
I wouldn't say gift vouchers are a con or a rip off, and those words are used to easily but they are not good. You pay £10 and you get a £10 voucher! Derrrr.
You pay your money and you take the risk. About two years ago I found £20 worth of vouchers for a well known store that expired 3 years before. They just ended up shoved in the back of the draw, if that was cash, It would have gone into my wallet. If it was a gift I would have possibly still had it.”

“"Vouchers have been suspended while we assess the financial position"
As experienced elsewhere, they may well honor them after the situation has been fully assessed.”

“You use words like 'swindled' and you don't know what they mean. The law of the land says otherwise, if you don't like it then petition your M.P.
FYI - once in administration - the company has ceased to exist, they are there in name only. I'd love to know how you come up with 'obtaining money by deception' - if I borrow a tenner off you, then a year after I can't pay it back, is that deception? Or just a reflection of my current status?”
