Residents condemn "dangerous" roadworks
MOTORISTS have hit out at "dangerous" roadworks on a busy motorway sliproad.
People living in and around Quedgeley said it was only a matter of time before someone was seriously hurt, or killed on the northbound sliproad at junction 12 of the M5.

ANGRY: Joe Howes at Junction 12 of the M5.
Joe Howes, who works in Cheltenham, said: "I nearly got wiped out the other day, it's very dangerous.
"For many months this junction has had narrow lanes in place and joining the motorway in the dark winter mornings has been unpleasant but not particularly dangerous.
"However, this has changed in the last week or so. The motorway traffic is now merged into three narrow lanes and shifted left onto the hard shoulder just prior to the joining lane. Effectively, the main motorway is now using the joining lane's old acceleration lane.
"Cars joining the motorway are now funnelled straight into the motorway traffic, with little space to merge safely. The problem is compounded as the joining driver's view of the motorway traffic is obscured by wooden fencing and then an eye-level crash barrier."
Mr Howes also called for information about what was actually going on, adding that he had seen little activity at the junction.
He said: "What amazes me is that they've been working there on and off for about a year, and you don't really see them doing anything.
Mr Howes added: "It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt."
Fellow motorist Darren Powell, 38, of Hardwicke, who also travels to Cheltenham five days a week said: "It's so dangerous I thought I was going to die there the other day.
"I drove down the slip road and, to my horror, an Argos lorry almost went into the back of me."
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the work was due to last a few more weeks.
He said: "The work at M5 J12 is to strengthen the bridge pillars and will last another two weeks. The traffic management has been laid out in accordance with regulations, and three lanes have been kept open by using the hard shoulder.
"There are signs to warn vehicles on the M5 that traffic is merging at the junction, but we can look at the signage again if this is causing a problem."

“Some long time locals will probably do as I do.
Use Junction 13.
It's a proper full junction and only puts about 3-5 minutes on your journey.”

“Whitevanman - Read again, I didnt claim I was better drive. Just reminded some people about common sense. However, you just confirmed my point. You mention 70mph+ in rush hour in roadworks.
Thanks for confirming my point.”

Don't just come on here and claim to be a better driver than everyone else.
The fact that so many have reported near misses should give you some measure of public opinion.
You have obviously never been stuck on the ramp with vehicles flying past your wing mirror at 70+ during the rush hour.
I know of no other junction that doersn't clear ramp traffic as a priority.”

“If you know or think it is dangerous, be more careful. The Highways Agency cant mollycoddle all the drivers who are inadequate of driving safely in accordance to road conditions. Come on drivers, take some responsibility!”

“Junction 12 both north and south bound is an absolute joke. I am amazed there have been no accidents yet! It is dangerous and the highways agency should do something to sort it out immediately even if it means starting these invisible bridge works.....”

A number of points;
1) ....a few more weeks!!! What on earth was being done for the the three months before Christmas??
2)...strengthening the bridge pillars!! You mean it could fall down on us at any moment? If it's not safe, tear the whole lot down and start again.
3)...been laid out in accordance with regulations... That may be so, but not many junctions have just one lane, are on a bend etc, etc, and just because they are adhering to regs, doesn't mean common sense could and should prevail, especially when lives are at risk.
4) ...there are signs to warn drivers. Again, may be, but they are not prominent enough, and as said, the accelerating lane has been taken away, even though merging speed is 50. There are also camber difficulties at exactly the merging point.
Also, I am regularly overtaken by artics exceeding 50 in v.narrow lanes. I report them to the company via websites on the trailers. I always get an apology from the transport dept. concerned.
And finally, we were told that all of this was an interim measure to get some warning signs up before they were going to spend squillions sorting out the ramps. And by the way, just sorting the ramps out will be a waste of time, as the whole juncytion is so small, but getting busier with increased housing to the south of Gloucester, and more business realising it is quicker to join there, rather than J11 or 11A.
If you actually observe the traffic going from Stonehouse to Hardwicke, and vice versa, ie, not using the Mway, it is going very slowly, but bunched up, so opportunities to merge and get off the ramp are limited, causing the tailbacks onto the motorway both north and south.
And while were on this, why are the HA spending money enlarging the roundabout at Naas Lane, which will slow down artics etc?”

“Junction 12 has got to be one of the worst if not the worst junction on the whole Motorway network (only junction 3 on the M50 is more stupid)”
