The Royal Albert Memorial Museum reopened to the public in December and is among contenders for the title Museum of the Year 2012
The Exeter City Council-run museum reopened its doors to the public in December, after closing for a multimillion pound revamp in 2007.
The works were undertaken by BAM Construction, which was also behind build projects on a further three museums in the running for the Art Fund Prize this year.
Members of the public currently have the opportunity to put forward the case for their local museum to the awards judging panel, chaired by former culture secretary Lord Smith of Finsbury, via a link at www.artfundprize.org.uk.
The judges will also visit the Exeter museum, at a date to be confirmed, before announcing their four finalists in May. The winner will be revealed at a ceremony at the British Museum – last year's prize winner – on June 19.
Exeter City Council leader Pete Edwards, said: "We are absolutely delighted that RAMM has received the recognition that we know it deserves.
"The redevelopment has made a well-loved museum great; a truly world-class museum that reflects the vitality of the city and will serve us for decades to come."
