And the veteran broadcaster, who has commentated in 49 countries, was happy to share his experiences with an audience at Gloucester Guildhall.

Among the wealth of anecdotes on offer was a particularly amusing tale which saw Hollywood actor Jack Nicholson clamber into the commentary booth at Wimbledon as Motson covered a tennis match.
As a producer tried to keep Motson focused on the match, Nicholson took hold of a mic and said: "Tell them the score, Johnny."

An articulate Motty held a captive audience in the palm of his hands throughout the night with his likeable personality coming into its own as staff scurried around to correct technical issues affecting a montage of footballing moments.
