YOUNG musicians went head-to-head to make a big noise at All Saints' Academy.

The Cheltenham school rocked to a Battle of the Bands.

The colourful gig was masterminded by 14-strong Young Enterprise group Symphony, who are events organisers.

Four local bands, with members aged 15 to 20, gave their all for an enthusiastic audience of nearly 100 youngsters.

Heavy rock group Tides, from Cleeve School, won the public vote. They saw off the competition from All Saints' pop-punk band Semonar, Bournside School's indie band Escape Plan and Picture This, a full-time employed acoustic duo.

Symphony secretary, Emily Smith, said: "We wanted to give young bands an opportunity to showcase their talent and win prizes for what they do. It was the first time Semonar had played in front of a public audience, but others had more experience.

"The bands went down well as they were all different genres – some weren't some people's cup of tea, but others were, so it really worked."

The young enterprise group made around a £200 profit from tickets and food.

Tides won tickets to the 2000 Trees Festival at Upcote Farm, Gloucestershire.

“It is great to dee a local band flying the flag for real music; Unlike most of the idiots on reality shows and talent(less) competitions, in which if you wear your hat backwards, and "sho' some", and talk street, you'll win a recording contract with the arch demagogue himself, Cowell. Take note from these boys, they're destined for big things, and well done to them!”
