River dredge rethink call
DREDGING Tewkesbury's rivers to reduce flooding should be reconsidered, according to a councillor.
Town, borough and county councillor Vernon Smith said: "I'm hoping to talk to the Environment Agency in a meeting early next month that will be chaired by Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson.
"I want to talk to the agency about revisiting the argument for dredging rivers."
He said the agency had said that work on clearing watercourses since 2007 had helped to reduce the number of homes that flooded in Gloucestershire during the flooding of late last year. He said he believed that it followed that river dredging would improve the situation further.

He added that the meeting would also discuss what might be done in the future, in terms of creating specific flood alleviation schemes in Tewkesbury.
Many people in the town have wondered why nearby towns such as Pershore and Upton have had major flood defences built but Tewkesbury has not.

“At least a Councillor is thinking what us Plebs have been thinking for decades.
Increasing the capacities of runaways, ditches, drains and rivers is the best way to keep our feet dry.
Now we just need to convince our government to help this country before wasting resources correcting problems in other countries, such as Mali,Libya,Afghanistan etc.”
