WASTE experts have been dishing the dirt on a new recycling scheme in Brockworth.

Tewkesbury Borough Council's waste roadshow was in the village on Saturday, and more than 60 residents turned out to find out more about the scheme.

The authority, which covers areas of Gloucester such as Brockworth, Hucclecote and Churchdown, sent out a selection of new bins to householders earlier in the month.

Brian Weeks, a 75-year-old Brockworth man, said: "I came along because I'm concerned about what I have to do with things like broken glass, bike frames and electricals.

"I wasn't sure which bin to put things in, but they were quite helpful and I've had my questions answered."

Ernie Flounders, Brockworth's tree warden, was also there to find out more about the scheme.

He said: "I've got my bins and I'm absolutely delighted.

"I think it's long overdue, and all we need to do now is encourage people to use them properly."

Resident Carrie Gibbs said: "We recycle a lot anyway, so we're going to give it a go. We're still going to use composting for our own purposes. The roadshow has been very informative."

Borough Councillor Maureen Rowcliffe-Quarry (Lib Dem, Brockworth) was also among the residents who wanted to know more.

She said: "It's been very informative.

"It's been a really good chance for people to come and ask questions, and some of the questions asked have been very interesting."

Julie Davies, Environmental Development Officer for the council, said the event had gone very well.

She said: "It's been really good.

"We've had a lot of people asking questions, and we have been able to answer more specific queries.

"It's also quite nice, because we've had a lot of people who don't have access to the internet, and we've been able to help them out."

Tewkesbury's new waste collection scheme involves a bigger, blue recycling box which has been sent to every household situated in the borough.

Residents have also received two green "caddies" for food waste. The smaller caddy can be kept in the kitchen and emptied into the larger one for collection. Food waste will be collected every week and the new blue recycling bin will be collected fortnightly, alternating with the existing green bin for landfill waste

Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Clean and Green Environment Councillor Jim Mason said: "The delivery of the new bins marks the first visible change to our recycling and waste collection scheme.

"We are asking residents to continue to use their current recycling boxes until the scheme starts on 12, April – and the blue bin can be used to store plastic bottles and cardboard until then.

"I encourage residents to keep hold of their new collection calendars as these hold the collection dates for the rest of the year."

“Are the people of Brockworth so stupid they have to shown what each bin is for and how to use it?
In Gloucester we just had a leaflet.”

“The local borough cllr wanted to learn more, vbut she was part of teh Council that voted the scheme in. Did she not ask for details before she voted? Or did she vote without caring for what she voted?”

“Little consideration seems to have been given as to where all these bins are to be kept. My son lives in a row of town houses many with no side or rear access hence the bins are kept in front of the proprties. The result is an eyesore, it looks like the invasion of the rubbish bins. What if any solution to this problem do the council have?”

    Not so.
I have yet to see any new bins.”

“I have returned my 2 un-used green food waste bins when the council gang returned to collect the uneccessary blue wheelie bins delivered to our street's communal area. I simply have nowhere to put the food waste bins in my kitchen!”

“I cannot understand why Tesco Brockworth's recycle skips were as usual overflowing with rubbish on Sunday - don't people know you can stick it all in your new big blue wheelie bin?

Someone had dumped a fridge & old settee cushions there yesterday - thick, stupid people!”

“The blue wheelie is great and will easily last two weeks between collections and no more more weekly trips to Tesco car park with plastic milk bottles & cardboard. The green food waste bins I'm not so sure about as I object to paying for bio-degradable liners! I think I will eat everything from now on to avoid having to use them.”
