CHELTENHAM Town have confirmed the signing of former Bristol Rovers and Fulham striker Barry Hayles on a one-year deal.

The Robins are also in discussions over a deal for their former star striker Julian Alsop.

Jamaica international striker Hayles, 37, made 13 appearances for the Robins in two separate loan spells last season, scoring four goals.

After starting his career with Willesden Hawkeye in the the Spartan League, he joined Stevenage Borough.

After impressing in the Conference for the Hertfordshire outfit, he joined Bristol Rovers for £250,000 in 1997.

Afer scoring 37 goals in a little over 18months at the Memorial Stadium he signed for Fulham in a deal worth over £2million.

In six years at Craven Cottage he scored over 50 goals, impressing in the Premier League.

After leaving Fulham, successful spells at Millwall and Plymouth followed before joining Leicester City.

It was while at Leicester that Hayles enjoyed two loan spells with the Robins.

Alsop joins up with Cheltenham from Zamaretto League South West division outfit Bishop's Cleeve.

He impressed for the Robins in a three-year spell at the club from 2000 to 2003.

He scored 45 goals in his three seasons with the club, scoring memorably in the 3-1 play-off final win against Rushden and Diamonds.

He left the Robins to join Oxford United on a 'Bosman' transfer in 2003 and has since played for Northampton, Forest Green, Newport County and Bishop's Cleeve.

  • Huddersfield striker Tom Denton will join Cheltenham for training today and is set to play against Southampton tomorrow. Allen is looking to sign him on a long-term loan.

“Maybe some of you guys with the destructive criticism of Manager and Chairman would be better off taking your so called support elsewhere - Nailsworth, Gloucester City or Hereford for example.
The remaining 3,000 or so of us, plus the floating fair-weather voters can probably manage without you after we manage to stabilise in League 2 shortly.”

“Well done MA on signing Hayles - bet that surprised some of the anti-MA brigade eh?
Alsop, well, he'll be rolled out as needed it seems, which maybe will be more often than people think due to our small squad. Can't see Alsop being on the field for more than 20 mins at a time, but if he knocks in 5/6 goals this season, then it will have been a productive and very cheap sigining.

How's this for a scenario? Hayles wins a header from a Brown punt up field, he flicks onto Hammond who flies down the wing amd crosses the ball to Alsop, who with his 1st touch, knocks the goalie out, then proceeds to tap the ball into the empty net from 2 yards!! Welcome back Jules!”

“alf... sheringham yes because he never relied on pace he had a footballers brain but alsop isnt a teddy sheringham i saw him come on and score a late winner away at port vale but that was 5 years ago ,and too all the others that think the manager and board of ctfc are beyond criticism why are we borrowing from the council again? administration will happen this season as £100k goes no where in football, even in our non league days we had ambition and a squad that was ctfc through and through and i personally feel that has been lost,am i wrong?.”

“I love to see some of the Hayles/Alsop critics line up against them in a competitive game. They may realise how much experienced players have to offer in div.2. Cut out the ageist remarks! How old was Sheringham when he quit the premiership. Goalscorers of any description are a sought after commodity. we are v. fortunate especially with Bazza!”

      “Well hello there Vincent.
I heard that Hereford couldn't afford any wheelie bin men, so they just played against some wheelie bins. The wheelies won 3-0.”

“Do any of you actually read the article? He is signing on non contract terms and will only appear for us ON THE BENCH if we are deperately short of strikers for any reason, he will be 5th (possibly 6th) choice and is costing us nowt, some people need to take the negative glasses off and actually read whats happening before jumping to conclusions....”

“I so wish that some of the fools who post on here would actually read the whole article rather than the headline. Alsop isn't even going to train with us full time, he has signed on a non contract basis and Allen will wheel him out if and when required. he has clearly lost weight, got himself fit and would do a job if he was called upon. I am sure that Hayles, Hammond and Richards would always be preferred options. Alsop is a Robins legend but there is no way Martin Allen would be swayed by sentiment (we have seen his lack of sentiment in evidence time and time again) he has seen something in Alsop and lets be fair, can he be any worse than Paul Connor??”

“We have over dozen clubs within a 40 mile radius playing at the same standard of Bishop Cleeve. Does this mean that Alsopp is the best striker around here.
The football at the Abbey stadium is going to be so attractive”

“This story has given us all a chuckle.

I presume Allen is under strict instructions from Cheltenham Borough Council to bring in some big strong lads who can haul a few wheelie bins about with ease.”
