RUGBY club bookkeeper Marie Witts has admitted defrauding its social club out of at least £9,500.

The 40-year-old, of Bailey Hill, Yorkley, pleaded guilty to six offences of fraud against Bream Rugby Social Club between January 1, 2009 and May 8, 2010.

Julian Kesner, prosecuting, told Gloucester Crown Court the amounts involved in the six charges added up to more than £3,600 but they were merely "specimens" of her offending.

It was anticipated she would be asking for other offences to be taken into consideration, he said.

"We cannot prove precisely the total loss to the club but it is not less than £9,500," said Mr Kesner.

He told the court the charges represented two methods of defrauding the club.

In the first three charges, she abused her position as the club's bookkeeper to pay herself sums of £501, £790 and £698.

Mr Kesner said these represented her taking the money from the funds but then "hiding" it by putting it down as bar purchases and other expenses. The other three charges she admitted were of making false representations to the club's bank, Lloyds TSB, to cover up forged cheques for £675, £510.78 and £510.74.

"These charges involve her inflating invoices," he said.

Judge John Neligan asked defence solicitor Shabhia Pathan if there was any possibility of Witts being able to pay compensation.

"I have requested that in the next few weeks she speaks to her husband about that," said Ms Pathan.

"She will talk to him about having an additional loan taken out against their home.

"She has made arrangements for another job in the next couple of weeks and that will give her additional income."

Judge Neligan bailed Witts for a pre-sentence report and told her to return to court on February 24.

"All sentencing options will be open," he warned her.
