The latest innovation by internet giant Google has divided opinion online.

Street View, an extension of the Google Maps application, enables viewers to view 36--degree photographs of streets in around 25 UK cities.

But while some have hailed the technology as an innovation worthy of praise, others have hit out at the potentially negative uses of the site, such as thieves checking out potential targets.

What do you think? Is Google simply trying to broaden the scope of the internet, or is the facility a possible infringement of privacy and a sign of online intrusion?

Whatever your view, use the form below to let us know...

“I'm totally amazed at the Pommy need for secrecy. What are you trying to hide? We have had Streetview in Australia (ALL Australia, not just the big cities, but EVERYWHERE) for over a year now, and I'm not aware of any rise in crime. Suppose you want to see what that house looks like which you are thinking of buying - you can see whether the neighbours keep their property tidy or whether they are the neighbours from hell. If you are going to a house for the first time, you know what the house looks like. No more driving at nil speed or having to walk around in the rain to find the place. Or maybe you want to get to a specialist shop on the other side of town, Google Earth and Streetview will get you there.

Recently, my niece and her family moved to a country town about 500 miles away. We were able to see where they were going to live and where the children could play just down the road.

When the UK got Streetview I looked at the first house that my wife and I bought 34 years ago. It looked much the same. But what frustrated me was that neighbours had caused their houses to be blacked out from Streetview for no apparent reason. The point of Streetview is that you can see all properties (which after all, you can see if you go there)

As far as I know, every street in Australia is visible, and I don't see anything wrong with that.

What's wrong, Britain? Do you really have something to hide, or are you just paranoid?”

“I can't see a problem with this amazing new facility.
Just think how many CCTV cameras catch us in various places doing various things throughout the day and night.”

“If you look through the window of my house you can clearly see me in the window eating my dinner. I don't object to this as any potential burglar looking at street view would think that I was in and therefore think very carefully about robbing it. Well done Google.”

“If we got rid of everything that is used for wrong doing by someone or other what would we have left?!”

“Two years ago a terrorist organisation admitted to using Google maps for planning bombings and escape routes.

The man describing this abuse of technology had a lap-top in one hand, and an AK47 in the other.

    Not all technology is good.

With regard to burglars, several burlgars have already admitted to using Google Maps.”

“Great idea. I've got no problem with it. I prefer wikimapia though - it's only satellite images, but anyone can go on and mark up places of interest (e.g. Westall Green "with the most inaccessible filling station in the country")”

“I've just had a look at it for the first time and the image quality is pretty good. What did amuse me was the use of blurring. I understand it on people's faces, but I think it's been used a bit over enthusiastically on signs. I saw once instance of a Road Closed sign where Road had been blurred out, but Closed was still clear.l
A little more work required there I think.”

“Got no problem with it. The pictures are fairly clear, but definitely not HD. You can see a house, but you can't see what type of locks it has. In fact, its probably less invasive than the "satellite imagery" function of the same website, which shows the layout of the roof, surrounding streets, and shows peoples back gardens.

Personally, I find all of these things very useful when visiting a new area; I can even zoom into junctions to work out which lane I will need to be in when I get there.”
