Petrol prices will reach record levels this year, according to research by the AA.

The organisation has warned unleaded fuel could soon cost £1.20 a litre or more and urged Chancellor Alistair Darling to delay the introduction of a planned 3p increase in petrol duty due to come in on April 1.

AA president Edmund King said: "If families, drivers on fixed incomes and those on low pay were unable to cope with record prices then, they are even less likely now."

AA research found an average family with two cars is paying £52 a month more to fill up now than a year ago.

The average petrol price in the UK is 115.9p for a litre of unleaded and 116.6p for a litre of diesel, according to www.petrolprices.com.

But what do you think? Should the tax increase be called off or should we be looking at other options?

“As long as this government and the rest of the world leaders keep lying about so called climate change things will just get worse for joe public.
If we truly need to reduce emissions then they would be encouraging all road users to switch to diesel which is cheaper to produce, has a smaller carbon footprint in relation to production and is more fuel efficient. Also they would use better materials to surface the roads, you can easily see on a good car with instant economy readout that the road surface can make up to 10mpg difference, that is huge and would make an immense difference to emmisions.
As it is, diesel is taxed more than petrol, the road surfaces are in a terrible state and every excuse to tax us pretending it is to do with the environment is taken.
It is all lies and until governments do something tangieble instead of punitive measures I will never believe it.”

“I live in the Forest (born & bred) and because there are no jobs there, I have to travel to Cheltenham and Gloucester to work. I'm a skilled worker, in a low paid job. If fuel continues to rise It will no longer be viable to travel to work and keep my family. I drive a small car not a gas guzzler! I cant take public transport because where I live there is none, not that fit in with my early morning start. So I cant help wondering how many others like me could be forced to give up work, and have to claim benefits, which I am loath to do.”

“Well the truth is coming out now, after this government has given, or sold off the country's assets, it is now desperate to claw money in anyway it can, and it picks on a easy prey, like the hard pressed workers, who have to travel too work. It is time for new leader, and dump this lot of parasites. Also has anyone noticed how the price of fuel, has evened up to top whack, here in Gloucester, and in Bristol, which used to be cheaper by 3p a litre, but has risen to the same price. Another blow to the motorist.”

“The government need to give us back the 2p stealth tax they put on per litre last year when they dropped VAT - not just keep topping it up.

We must have by now about the most expensive petrol in the civilised world and the worst roads anywhere outside the third world.

Biggest question is what are they doing with our money? Isn't it about time that independent outside auditors were responsible for auditing the government's books? It might save us more than enough to put this country right... especially if MP's drawings were monitored effectively and they stopped ripping off the workers for their own benefit!!”
