HAVE YOUR SAY: Royal finances
ARE you happy to fund the Royal Family to the tune of 69p per person?
The total cost of keeping the monarchy increased by £1.5 million to £41.5 million during the 2008-09 financial year, figures revealed this week.

The Royal Family
Palace accounts also showed that the Queen dipped into a reserve fund to boost her Civil List by £6 million.
The total £41.5 million cost for the Royal Family excludes the cost security provided by the police and Army, and the ceremonial duties performed by the Armed Forces.
Does the Monarchy represent good value for money?
If you could divert the money spent on keeping the Royals into something else, what would it be?

“I wonder if you travelled back in time what the peasants might think of the royal family?thats if the tyranical ancesters of the royal family permitted them to have an oppion. Now I except that todays royal family may not behave in the same manor or do they?there is still much debate about Philips involvement with the death of Diana for example.I must admit that I admire the work Prince Charles does for the environment and I think that Harry and Wills are credit to the royal family. The Queen, god bless her, puts us all in line on Christmas day and ensures that many ships are covered in champagne and the plaque makers world wide stay in buisness keeping up with all the buildings she opens,COME ON PEOPLE wheres your sense of national pride!,after all we are no longer able to fly the cross of saint George and have all but lost our commonwealth,I think 69p is a small price to pay for have something that indentifys us as british!”

“The royal family have been living off the state for far too long. They are nothing but an inbred collection of fabulously rich scroungers.
The simple solution is for the all the royalty lovers to have money stopped every week to pay for them, including the policing costs to this county.
Then we'll see how many royalists there are.”

“I will happily pay not 0.69p but 0.96p a year but only for queen ...because Royal family is an Icon for Great Britain...and lots of tourist come to visit UK especially to see Buckingham palace and stuff”

“What a load of meanies! I'm quite hard up but happy to pay 69p per year to keep our Royals. The main ones (The Queen, Princes Philip & Charles and Princess Anne) do a lot for this country and it's people in many different ways.
What I do object to is having my hard earned taxes wasted by the government.
The tourism the royals bring in isn't just visits to their palaces; they may see Buckingham Palace but then spend loads of money in London and go to other areas afterwards.”

“I am all for the Royal Family and they deserve every penny. They work hard and pay taxes. I don't mind giving them 69pence.
What I do object to is that my hard earned wages are being given out to the long term unemployed, so that they can buy fags and scratchcards.”

“I'm neither Pro nor Anti Monarchy.
It's what we have and we should use it to best effect both in Tourism and Politics.
There are other institutions that do give me the hump. i.e. The MEP's who are well accomplished chisellers that are well in front of our Westminster Fagins in the Grasping Stakes.
I'll bet they cost us more than £41 Million and give us immeasurably more grief than the Royals.”

“How dare these people claim to be good value, when I have no choice but to pay for them, short of a revolution we're stuck with them and they STILL refuse to disclose how much their security is costing Gloucestershire residents. What a bunch of self serving, bumtious parasites they all are. Cromwell was right!”

“I am very happy to pay for our monarchy. They create millions of pounds from tourists visiting this country to see them and the traditions surrounding them. They put thousands of hours into supporting charities and their traditions are (or should still be) the back bone of britain. If you dont like them you shouldn't live here-they are the one thing that remains the same in this ever changing country. And unlike most of the a-list celebrities in this country they only miss appointments in extreme cases, reply to as much of their post as possible support our forces and provide good role models for our children.”

“the queen should have ONE home and sell the rest and then she would have plenty to live on...the fat cats too in the government dont know how the poor people live.... they dont know what its like to want food and clothes. it makes me sick that all the top people still want to live like lords.. while the rest of the country is TRYING to cope with nothing.”

“Perhaps some of you should look at the real detail behind Royal expenses before knocking them. Perhaps look at something called the Civil List and the income from the Crown Estates.
69p per person per year ? I'd rather her have it than give it to the rogues at the Council for thier pension fund.”
