Safety check put on hold
COUNCILLORS have put plans to check on the health and safety status of Tewkesbury Town Hall on hold.
Town mayor Ken Powell wanted the town council to ask the Health and Safety Executive to carry out a survey of the building to ensure it complied with legislation.
He doubted that the building would be up to scratch. But members have decided they would first find out how much such a survey would cost before agreeing that it should go ahead.
They also felt their new lead member for matters relating to the hall, Kevin Cromwell, needed more time to assess the situation.

“It sounds like the members on this council are totally out of their depth!
I would have thought they'd had this sorted years ago with the modern claim society. Surely their insurers would insist they have a health and safety risk assessment carried out as part of the public liability cover, or maybe their not insured or haven't read the small print yet! The best solution would be sell it off and use the council offices down the road and spend the money on more practical projects that the town will benefit from!”

“So, a survey on a survey...............
You really couldn't make it up, could you?
And civil servants wonder why private sector workers have such a low opinion of them?
And meantime, any potential non-compliance with legislation, will mean any scoundrel reading this, will find some way claiming against the Council...................now where's that 'wrong ladder' I was issued with to change that light bulb.........................”

“Shireresident - absolutely - if they suspect the building will not meet present day standards for public use - the only way to be certain is by doing an audit - are the councillors saying that their decision whether to carry out a survey is dependent on the cost - a little like a car owner deciding to defer an MOT because of the charges and the fear that the MOT will reveal further work needed that will cost more money. Now that will be irresponsible of the motorist - criminal on the part of the councillors - hope the H and S agency takes note and comes down on this lot in any case. Can't the local district or county council department concerned with such matters carry out a preliminary survey to identify the main areas of concern to plot further surveys or actions needed. How long does it take the lead-member to educate him/herself of the basics”

“Putting things off could open the council to problems if anyone had an accident whilst in the building. Making sure the Town Hall is safe for public use is not something that can be ignored forever.”
