VIDAL Sassoon was a "hairdressing god" said his former student Mark Blake on the day of the renowned stylist's memorial at St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Stars from Sir Michael Caine to Zandra Rhodes and John Frieda turned out to honour the top stylist, known for inventing the 'bob', who died at his Los Angeles home in May, aged 84.

Mr Blake, who co-owns Blushes salon with branches at Cheltenham, Cirencester and Gloucester, trained under the iconic figure along with his brother Darrell.

"He changed the face of hairdressing and was a hairdressing god," he said.

"Darrell and I did an advanced cutting course at Sassoon's and one day we actually met him. He nipped back to the London salon before flying to New York, after a cancelled flight. I was 18 and it was like a royal visit. To have this icon come up and shake your hand was amazing.

"He asked us where our accents were from. I thought he wouldn't know Cheltenham so I asked him if he'd heard of Bristol. Then he told me he had a good friend living in Stroud – I couldn't believe Vidal Sassoon had been to Stroud."
