GUNFIRE rang out in Coleford town centre at the weekend as residents gathered to remember an historic event.

The Battle of Coleford took place on February 20 1643 when a tiny band of local militia stopped a 2,000-strong Royalist army on its way to attack Gloucester.

On Saturday, residents and members of battle society the Sealed Knot gathered at the scene of the fighting, Coleford's Market Place.

Sealed Knot member Ian Blyth helped organise the event said: "It was a good event, we had a strong turnout although probably not as many as we would have because of the rally at Speech House."

A volley of musket gunfire rang out to mark the day.
