PLAYERS from Gloucester clubs had a successful time in the Bowls England five-star rated Weston-super-Mare Ladies' Open bowls tournament.

Husband-and-wife team Roy and Pauline Gunn (Caer Glow) won the mixed pairs title after beating another husband-and-wife combination, Gill and Roger Fry of Gloucester Spa, with surprising ease in the final, 24-6.

Fry, the defending singles champion, lost 21-11 in her semi-final against Clevedon's Sue Bird.

Pauline Gunn and her Caer Glow club-mates Dave and Kay Gent won the £300 first prize in the mixed triples.

Third place in the same event went to the Gloucester City team of Len Tompkins, Ron Wilks and Barbara Clarke.

In the gala fours the Gloucester City trio of Jo Palmer, Sandra Curtis and Matt Curtis, partnered by Jill Kemsley (Churchdown), won the play-off for third place.
