Selfish drivers continue to clog up street
SELFISH drivers are still clogging up a street in Barton, months after residents first complained about the problem.
Homeowners in Stratton Road said parents dropping off their children at the Al Ashraf school were still causing issues in the narrow street, and teachers are using up valuable residents' parking space instead of parking on site.

COMPLAINTS: Councillors Said Hansdot, and Usman Bhaimia, with residents Lorraine Mutty, Doug Blake, Gillian Coleman, Mohammad Siddiq, Dorothy Early and Samira Shaikh at the Al Ashraf Cultural Centre.
Gloucester City Councillor Said Hansdot (Lab, Barton and Tredworth) said the situation had been made worse because less parking was available on the school site.
He said: "There used to be eight spaces and now there are just three, so it's even worse in the street.
"It has got really bad, and it's very dangerous, so I have had residents coming up to me and asking what was going on."
He said he was worried about the safety of pedestrians in the area, with heavy traffic using the street during busy times.
Last year, The Citizen reported that members of the community, elected officials and representatives of the school had got together to discuss the problem.
But resident Lorraine Mutty said nothing had changed, and the situation was getting worse.
She said: "They're really taking the mick to be honest.
"We had a meeting last year, and they agreed to abide by the rules and have the teachers parking on the site, but even after one day, it was back to normal again.
"It's ridiculous, and from what I've heard they may even want to extend the classrooms, which means they will lose even more parking spaces."
Drop-off
She said parents, instead of being directed to a drop-off zone on the school site, were pulling up on double yellow lines and causing congestion in the mornings and evenings.
She said: "I've even seen the headteacher parking out on the street before.
"It is causing problems for people who live here, of course it is."
The Citizen contacted the Al Ashraf school for comment, but received no reply.

“And those workers probably park on Magdala Road for similar reasons as the teachers, convenience.
The revived PAG would speak directly to companies/schools, etc, and encourage them to speak in turn to the drivers who inconvenience residents/endanger children. Well, if I had any say in the matter. For all that the acting chairman purports to encourage the involvement of residents, and says he certainly won't do it all, the committee is actually very choosy about who it will work with.”

“While this article does have a higher profile, I should also explain that the Highways authority have now responded to the long delayed application for changes to line markings (and I can't see my comment where I explained why it was delayed, has that been removed?) by telling the partnership's acting chairman, Philip Lowery, that they need more information, and how much action would cost. This was a month ago, but it seems that he has still not informed any Stratton Rd residents of the authority's response, and is only inviting the committee's thoughts on how to 'move forward', as long as none of those thoughts involve closing or moving the 'school', which won't cost residents £3,000 at all.
If residents have any thoughts of their own on that...

“I don't suppose this will be seen by anyone, unless they're searching specifically for 'Stratton', but there was proposal at the last partnership committee meeting to distribute a questionaire to residents about the calls for changes (which could cost £3,000). No-one was quite clear, though, whether this should be handed out just to Stratton Rd residents or the entire block, as teachers and parents parking on Stratton Rd has a knock-on effect for streets such as Hopewell and Vauxhall.”

“I assume that the car scrap yard was there before planning permission was required. I don't see how it can be got rid of. The school, on the other hand, was set up recently in very dubious circumstances.”

“Actually, Kay, despite much confusion about dates and times, the meeting on Wednesday starts at 6:30pm, according to flyers. In theory, it runs to 8, but I have a feeling it will run a bit longer than that. Wonder if they've bought an urn for hot drinks yet?”

“I think speakdtruth says exactly what most of residents think. This area are a law unto themselves, ignore the rules of refuse collection, park where you want and if that fails apply for a disabled bay.reap what you sow residents. reap what you sow...ha ha”
