FAILING to push through a radical revamp of the benefits system would be "too awful to consider" according to Gloucester's MP.

Richard Graham hailed the controversial shake-up a "noble cause" in a Commons debate, which he insisted would have the support of his constituents.

He highlighted the case of a young mother from Kingsholm. She found under the existing system she would be much worse off if she took a part-time job than if she stayed on benefits.

Mr Graham said: "Above all, the project is designed to provide strong incentives for everybody to return to work. It is not poorly thought out and there is no serious risk of it descending into chaos."

“To add my friend who runs his business could expand, he could employ people but he doesn't want to. Employment law is a burden, holiday pay, consultancy periods etc if he needs to make someone redundant, notice pay, and now the pension thing. It is just too much so he does the same as employees do and looks after himself and remains small. It is not as easy as many think.

A very unfair tax is when someone has a second job, they are penalised by paying extra money in tax on their second job. So if someone has two part time jobs, as well as the time and expense travelling from one job to another, they have to pay extra tax.”

“I would give my eye teeth for a proper job. But after several years of unemployment who is going to employ me? never mind pay me the equivalent 50K a year before tax.”

“the genuine sick people in this country along with people on low incomes always seem to get targeted , so unfare,i worked hard all my life untill 2 yrs ago i now have health issues and can no longer work i have no social life and struggle to keep my head above water i understand im not entitled to have spare money for things holidays etc i accept that . i payed my dues all those year , all im trying to say is life is hard enough . i dont agree with people abusing the system and am the first to say they should be punished and i would report anyone who abuses the system bye cheating the taxpayer , i feel sorry for the people trying hard to find work ive had to make a lot of changes to my life stylei accept that and know what alot of genuine people are going through, its ok for the wealthy to say sit back and judge pity they dont have to live like it for a few months then they would see how hard life can be !!lots of companies take on part time students paying poor wages with no contract so no holiday pay etc , whether you have £500.000 in the bank or £5 you still pay the same for a loaf of bread , keep hitting the poorest people in society is not the answere, but its always the rich that make the rules so the poor will always suffer , sorry to go on a bit folks but it makes me bloody mad !!”

    “Just a rant.
Why do some people and Politicians assume that everyone who claims benefits is work shy?
Not everyone on benefits is work shy, single parents have a full time job looking after their kids, people with long term illnesses and disabilities and their carers (not every disabled person claims benefits, lots are working, even more have been employed until places like Remploy closed).
Not everyone on JSA is work shy, there is not enough work for everyone, those who don't actively look for work or who cant prove they are actively seeking work then maybe they should lose their benefits.

Don't target the vulnerable in society, target those who avoid paying tax, M.P.s if you think state benefit is too much to live on, I suggest you try living on it for a month see how you cope going without food some weeks just so you can have heating or electric.”

“All very well saying people on benefits would be better off working, of course they would and 90% of claimants would give their eye teeth for a proper job with a working wage. As we all know such things are few and far between in the middle of the government induced double dip recession. Britains' low wage economy is a laughing stock, where else do stingy employers get subsidised by our taxes in the form of benefits for the hard working, low paid. Hardly the "free play of market forces" the government gives lip service to. This shower can't even get capitalism right so they clobber the poor as a diversionary tactic. If that's Mr. Grahams' idea of "a noble cause" I worry about his values.”

“Afriend of mine already working one part time job is looking for a second visiting the job centre when he finishes work every day , he says he will have to start looking further afield , he is having trouble paying his mortgage after buying a flat owing to his marriage breakdown this guy really does try hard but says the jobs are not there and im not being fussy i will take anything !the job he has now is working for a fruit and veg company they let him take home any unwanted left overs , he says without this little perk he would have to buy food and would not be able to pay the mortgage, which means having no family he would be out on the streets. the guy had a breakdown early last year at this rate he is heading foe another, where are all these jobs the gov talk about getting people back to work ? people are sick and fed up with them talking rubbish!! people on low incomes the genuine sick etc will be afraid to turn on their heating because of rip off fuel prices , this gov is just hitting the poor and like i say people are fed up with listening to them talking ****,
the only people to prosper will be undertakers a lot of people will just give up , the state pensioner will freeze or starve to death , our shop door ways will be full of people sleeping rough etc , so come on goverment show us where these jobs are ? you cant because your talking utter ****,you need to live in the real world”
