Shop 'amazed' as petition over colour backed
CUSTOMERS at a cake store in Winchcombe have rushed to its defence after it because embroiled in a row with Tewkesbury Borough Council over a new pink paint job.
More than 80 people have signed a petition in support of the Cake and Sugarcraft Boutique, in North Street, after its owners were told it would have to redo the work because the colour was inappropriate.
The order came after a complaint the store was looking to gaudy next to other shops.
Jan Minett, who owns the business, has vowed not to give in however, branding the decision "churlish".

And her customers seem to agree, rushing to sign the petition this week.
Tess Deacon, who works in the shop, said: "The support we have had has been amazing.
"We have had lots of people coming into the store specially to sign the petition and we have had others phoning us to express their support."

“Tim has a point. Rules and laws are in place for various reasons. The cake shop flouted the rules/law that was already in place, so would a petition really make an immediate difference? There are ways of doing things and this isn't it.
As for customers "rushing" to its defence is a bit exaggerated?”

“Was this not the same TBC that allowed coffee #1 to obtain retrospective planning permission?
@Tim: Only applies if this area is in a conservation zone. And comparing someone painting a shop front and having an illegal squat full of gypsies is like comparing a paper plane with a jumbo jet. No exactly the same thing and a bit superfluous.”

“TimMessanger you may quote the law as everyone has the right to do but is it necessary to do so in such a condescending and prejudiced manner..?
The people who are supporting Jan at the Cake and Sugarcraft Boutique are not being hypocritical, they are showing support for something that they feel passionately about.
Lets hope that bureaucracy does not prevail on this one!!”

“I don't know of a law that says cake shops can't pint their outside woodwork pink!”

“If it was a travellers' camp would you also sign the petition?
Look up hypocrisy http://tinyurl.com/9q7ft that's you that is!
The law is there for a reason and if the shop wants to break the law then they should pay the "penalty" the same as everyone else.
So the next step is to purchase some land in Winchcombe set up a travellers camp without planning and then the locals will sign the petition supporting the travellers camp and the council will give retrospective planning permission!”

“Haven't the planners at TBC got better things to do than this?”
