Shoppers disgusted by Tesco's battery pricing
LAST Friday while shopping in Tesco's, we purchased four D cell batteries. Checking the price we found that if we bought two packs of two Duracell batteries, it would cost us £3.50 per pack, a total of £7.
Almost next to the two packs were single packs of four at £8. I spoke to a young line manager and asked him to check the price. It was correct. I asked him, why the difference? His response was: "People buy them."
A lady next to me in the queue, hearing the conversation, told me of a two for one situation she was aware of. Apparently, she had spotted two for one offers in the reduced racks and the same goods in another isle with the same offer on them. Her concern was that shoppers purchasing from the discount area would think they had a discount, when in fact they did not.
The checkout ladies, hearing my issue, got one of the floor managers to speak to us. He said that pricing was not done in this shop but he would contact someone about it. This was a much more professional response.

On Saturday we went into Tewkesbury Tesco's. Passing the battery rack, I took a look. The price on them was the same as the Cheltenham shop. Are Tesco's in it to help the public or to help themselves?

“I find it quite common that supermarkets will sell multi-packs at a higher price per unit than singles. Consumers seem to imagine that if it's a multi-pack it must be cheaper. This is certainly not the case. Next time you go to the supermarket check out the prices, particularly the price per 100ml or 100mg in very small print. Tesco, for example, regularly change what is the cheapest way to buy branded cola. Sometimes bottles are cheaper, sometimes cans, per 100ml
With beans it is often the case that 1 tin is cheaper than 1 tin in a pack of four.
With Tesco mature cheese they have large blocks together in the fridge but if you look carefully buying a slightly larger lump means you will pay £5 per kilo instead of £7.”

“Silly complaint. Now what DOES annoy me are those Tesco promotions proclaiming "half price" or "buy one get one free" over an empty gap on the shelf! There are also times where a promotion has ended yet the promotional literature remains in situ.”
