Shoppers flood into B&M bargain store on launch day
By the end of Saturday thousands of Gloucester shoppers will have stepped into the city's new B&M Bargains store.
The store opened its doors at 9am on Southgate Street and already shoppers are talking about it.

B&M Bargains have opened in Gloucester
Pensioner Peter Dowding, 78, from Longlevans, said: "I think it is very good. This is what Gloucester needs right now and it is better than an empty shop sitting idle."
Store manager Richard Coley said the shop was pitching itself against retailers such as Argos rather than 99p stores.

He said: "This is a huge bargain store on two floors but we also have a big range of higher quality products at very good prices.
"Customers have been flooding in all morning since the doors first opened."

“It all adds to the Gloucester shopping experience. You can look round the Quays and see all the empty units and then wander round the centre and look in any one of the multitude of poundshops before having a Greggs steak bake (or a Wetherspoons baguette if you are feeling flush), then trudge back to your car to pay a fortune for parking before going home and vowing never to return.
Or alternatively you could go to Cheltenham and have a pleasant shopping experience. Yes, the parking is quite expensive in Cheltenham too but think of it as a sort of fee that you have to pay to shop in nicer surroundings.”

“Happy that another site is filled and people have been provided jobs and opportunity. I just hope that we will soon get the choice of shops other cities have. I like a bargain but some times I like purchasing mid and /or high end goods also...I cannot be the only one who would like choice??
Shopping weekends for me and my family are still the Bristols, Birmingham's etc simply because they provide choice for my hard earned.
Time will tell...this £60M contract may change things and Gloucester may start to aspire to be more then a "seconds" city”

“It sounds a bit like ''WHAT'' on Eastern Avenue .
Anything is better than empty shops . At a time when disposable income is in very short supply for large section of society there is a market for this type of shop . It's strange though that it's not so long ago that the chap selling rugs and carpets from his stall in this area was booted out by the city council, as this was a ''prestigious'' part of the city and they only wanted quality good sold in the ''Gate '' streets ?”

“it is NOT pound shop in fact i quite like it bit like the old woolworths some people would grumble about anything well its here to stay so thats tough you have to live with it, persoanlly i think it better than a empty shop”
