Shoppers out in force for Boxing Day sales in Gloucestershire

SHOPPERS in Cheltenham were out in force yesterday, despite the wet weather.

Families were on the hunt for Boxing Day bargains and no amount of rain could dissuade them from seeking out the best buys.

Clothing chain Superdry, which began in Cheltenham, said the sale at its store in Clarence Street was well received.

Ella Lodge, store manager at the shop, said: "It has been fantastic. It was really manic first thing this morning and I had to open five tills to accommodate everyone. We normally just have two working.

"Everyone is spending their Christmas money and we've just had record-breaking sales in the run up to Christmas, so it's great news for the store."

Ronald Price, from Charlton Kings, was happy to join the queues.

"It's nice to come out for some fresh air, even if I am not intending to spend too much," he said.

Dameon Wilson-Webb, 40, from Cheltenham, was shopping with his partner Fiona Boxhall.

He said: "It has been quite a good day and we enjoyed it."

Fifteen-year-old Isabel Taylor came from Ross-on-Wye with her grandmother Mavis Taylor.

Isabel said: "We've been out since 10am this morning. We have already done quite a lot, but will look around a few more shops."

Philippe Shaurin, 43, from France was visiting family and friends in Cheltenham over the festive period and decided to see what bargains he could find.

He said: "Even though it is raining, I think we all enjoy coming out to do a little bit of shopping.

"I am loving it and I think I'll come over next year."

Emma Wilks, 32, grew up in Cheltenham and came from Stoke-on-Trent to visit family.

She said: "It has been quite a good day, but the rain is just coming down.

"We started at about 9am with a cup of coffee and breakfast, but the shopping really started at 10am."

For hiking store Trespass in Cheltenham, business yesterday was mostly normal.

Assistant manager Chris Lee said: "Quite a few shoppers are going to Next and the shops around the high street, but because we are more specialised in hiking and skiing equipment, we don't get so many.

"There are a lot of people around, but it's been more or less the same as usual for us."
