The store at Gallagher Retail Park closed on Friday but plenty of shoppers still went there in the hope it would still be open, but were left disappointed.

Suzanne Green, from Bishop's Cleeve, said: "I was hoping to get a last minute bargain, but I wasn't relying on it for Christmas so it is not a massive problem that it did shut earlier than some of them.

"It is such a shame to see another big name close down, but I guess it is the times – everyone goes online now.

"I just feel really sorry for the staff losing their jobs so close to Christmas. It must be hard for them." A spokesman for Dreams, next to Comet in Cheltenham said: "We had a lot of people coming in on Saturday hoping that it would still be open and a lot of people have been driving up and turning around today."

The retail group went into administration in November and has been unable to find a buyer.

It previously shut down its distribution centre in Harlow leaving stores to sell the remaining stock.

Its branch at St Oswald's in Gloucester was one of the original 40 stores to close.

Administrators Deloitte was looking for a buyer to save the remaining 50 stores across the country. However, a bid never materialised spelling the end of the road for the chain.

Gloucester has also lost another Comet branch in Metz Way, which has closed with the loss of 15 jobs.

Meanwhile DIY fans are being warned two branches of Tile Choice have also shut.

The Midlands-based company has closed its shops in Kingsditch in Cheltenham and Bristol Road in Gloucester.

But both will reopen next year.

A spokesman said it was due to contractual problems with the leases not to poor trading conditions.

He said the company was looking at new sites and was hoping to reopen branches in March.

He said the five members of staff from the two stores had been offered positions at other branches.
