WARNING signs urging motorists to slow down at an accident blackspot near Cheltenham are due to be removed from today.

Gloucestershire Highways teams put up the electronic signs this week as they carried out resurfacing work on the B4077, near Alderton.

The stretch of road has been the site of several accidents in recent months, including one fatality, with residents voicing concerns the surface was left in a treacherous, broken-up condition.

The resurfacing work is due to finish today, meaning the signs will be removed. But community leaders say they should be installed on a permanent basis to avoid further accidents.

“The trouble with slow down signs is they dont tell you how much to slow down. You're travelling at 20mph and meet a slow down sign - how much do you slow down? You're travelling at 60mph and you see a slow down sign - how much do you slow down?
Motorists soon realise they've already slowed down, so stay at the same speed.
Would they be more or less effective than a sign saying 'speed up'. Speed up? By how much?

What about a sign saying 'Welcome!'
Oh the people here are welcoming. Let's slow down and see what they're like.
