ORGANISERS of an Italian market in Tewkesbury were fuming when posters advertising the special event were stolen.

Ahead of the market, which is taking place in the town today and tomorrow, officials put up posters in various locations.

But someone took many down, leading town centre trader Nickie Philipson-Stow to say: "It's not fair."

“GlosAnarchy thank you very much for this information, it is really appreciated. I know that ignorance is no defence but to be honest I never thought of this as flyposting. Been doing some research on this subject and now understand what is classed as flyposting and was shocked by a) the costs involved in clearing up when people put posters etc up and forget about them and b) the fines involved for doing this illegal act.

Will be finding out tomorrow who we need to contact and what is involved in getting permission from the local authority. There are a lot of people out there unwittingly breaking the law.

Again thank you very much for the information.”

“The organisers should read and understand the following - http://tinyurl.com/am3etal

If your fly posting has been caught out then you might be wise to shut up before someone makes a complaint to the planning department leading to an investigation and possible prosecution. Also any future licence for your "Italian Market" may have a clause introduced under the section 182 of the licencing act and if you are caught fly posting your licence could be revoked and then no event!”

“Gloucester City Council used to do a real blinder before they took the fly posting down they would put a big label on them with "poster CANCELLED" with "poster" in about 10pt text! This seamed to do the job because if you saw the fly post from you car you would assume the event was cancelled!

Depending on the road it might also be Gloucestershire Highways or The Highways Agency that would take them down on the grounds they are a distraction to drivers.

The people carrying out fly posting should remember the law has been changed and if it can be proved that a fly posting is a contributory fact in a fatal road traffic incident then they may be prosecuted for manslaughter.”

“Dear all, the laminated fliers in question were put up by members of The Discover Tewkesbury team. All past, present and future fliers will be made and paid for by members of the team not by the town council or TBC so NO public money was or has been used for this. They were put up with the full knowledge of TBC, indeed they also put up some larger yellow posters themselves.

You will also see from time to time large banners around Tewkesbury to promote different events that are taking place in the town. Both the banners and the posters have always in the past and will always in the future be taken down as near to the end of the event as is possible. We will not leave them up to litter the town like many other people do.

Discover Tewkesbury is a small group of retailers who got together 6 months ago. We are working together to try to promote your/our town, we will work with ANY other organisation to increase the local and national awareness of what is going on in and around Tewkesbury. The fliers and banners are one way to let local people know what is happening, we use social media, local and nation press and have also had TV coverage. Please leave any future notices up, how else can we let the vast majority of people know what is happening?

We are doing this because we care about Tewkesbury. We are all local business owners so yes we have a vested interest in this ie we want to increase trade and make Tewkesbury a more vibrant place for locals and visitors alike. Also many local people work within the retail sector in Tewkesbury so a lot depend on us for employment.

There will soon be banners, boards and laminated fliers around the area to promote Discover Tewkesbury £1000 Cash for Christmas. Someone who spends £20 or more in a participating business will win £1000. Please see fliers etc for details. The money for this prize comes from the participating businesess and not from any other source. Please support this local initiative and good luck.”

“Isit.JimKerr - I said they were fly-posted and so does the legal definition, in fact they were all over the place, in colour AND laminated too. I should imagine TBC employees removed them as that is their duty to do so.”

“I wish people went back and took down the signs when their event has finished. There are still signs up on the A38 Glos - Tewkes Road about the Apperley Harvest Festival (or something) which was in August.

There as been a poster up for the fair in Evesham stuck to the building which once housed Tewkesbury's award winning toilets for months.”

“Stolen, or removed? If the latter, by a competitor, or by the authorities? Just because the signs are no longer where they were placed doesn't automatically mean they've been stolen.”
