Singer Lily Cooper is facing a Twitter backlash after saying she would slaughter a pig for charity.

The Gloucestershire-based singing star's controversial plans to slaughter a pig for one of her Twitter followers in aid of Comic Relief have got her into hot water with animals lovers and animal rights groups.

The popular artist, formerly known as Lily Allen until her marriage to builder and decorator Sam Cooper in 2011, lives in Cranham.

She initially promised the highest bidder that she will name a swine after him or her before killing it and sending them all the cuts of meat.

Lily tweeted: 'The highest bidder on my #twittermillion page will get a pig named after them and bacon from it when it's killed. or the choice to spare it.' (sic)

She added: 'my.rednoseday.com/club/lilycooper  donate and I'll name my pig after you, send you pictures and then bacon and sausages.'

But she has since apologised for the suggestion.

She wrote: 'One vegetarian follower suggested that I offer the winner the chance to spare the pig so everyone could be involved. In retrospect, I could have been more sensitive. I hope that gives some clarity on the matter.I never said and I never would kill anything for charity or otherwise.'

But the apology has left some people still unhappy.

“As the theme for this year's Comic Relief is Do Something Funny for Money.....this is absolutely ****ing hilarious.......................................NOT!!!!
Actually, how about we all club together to buy her pad in Cranham, then she can **** off back to London where she would rather be shopping, and cutting tracks, that she said she would never do again.
Then we can all be spared this drivel from her, and TiG can go back to reporting real stories......well one can dream, can't one?”

“As a meat eater I can hardly object to killing animals for food can I? But "Comic Relief" gives the impression that Lily Cooper considers the slaughter of a pig a suitable subject for FUN and joviality, which - in my humble opinion - puts her in the same league as the mindless morons who enjoy killing animals purely for "sport".”

“It's just a 21st century version of 'bowling for a pig' at the local fete, with the added twist that the pig ain't dead yet, so the veggies can bid as well to save it.
    Best get bidding, veggies!”

“Very true Tim, but don't you have to have a license to slaughter animals ?”

“It's funny how some people don't want to know where their food comes from, this is the root of the equine burger fiasco.”
