SINGING Sid the terrier knows what it is like to stand in the spotlight.

But the 15-year-old terrier has now put his acting career permanently on hold after he became deaf through age.

The news that the Cheltenham pooch is officially "resting" comes as the Everyman Theatre launches a search for a local star.

A top dog is needed to appear in the Ukrainian National Opera's version of La Boheme, showing at Cheltenham Everyman later this year.

Sid's owner John Vickers, who runs Vintage Strings music shop in London Street, Cheltenham, said his dog had audiences at weddings and other celebrations, accompanied by his master on violin and mistress Jaye on accordion.

Jaye said appearing on the Everyman's stage would have been perfect in Sid's younger years.

He said: "Sid would have been a star. His singing was exceptional and, uncannily, he was always in tune especially to his favourite composer Bach. I'd tell anyone to put their dog on the stage.

"We got immense pleasure from his performances and he always got paid in bones.

"His career highlight was getting his own track, Sid's Hora on our CD A Night In the Garden of Eden. Previously he'd only sung backing vocals."

The role of Muzetta's pet dog is yet to be cast in the romantic opera La Boheme.

Director Ellen Kent said she was inspired to ask owners to volunteer their pets after her cat Holly Go-Lightly was an instant hit in a production.

"I'm sure there is plenty of doggie talent out there," she said.

Dogs need to be well-behaved and small.
