MOTORISTS in Gloucestershire have been urged to report new potholes caused by the wintry weather.

Compensation claims paid out by councils across the west to people whose cars were damaged by the road defects have now topped £1 million.

Residents have voiced fears the county council is struggling to keep up with the backlog of repairs needed following cold winters in 2010 and 2011.

And amid snow and ice in the county this week, concerns have been raised that potholes are emerging at a faster rate than they can be fixed.

“Going to get a LOT worse, pretty soon. Wet spell made a mess of the roads. Current cold weather adding to this, and it's going to be rather wet again next week. Dread to think what state the roads will be in in a few weeks' time.”

“I would like to know where my 215 quid a year goes. Some how I don't think it all goes on our roads.”

“What's the point? There were plenty of potholes before wintry weather and they weren't getting repaired.”
