CHELTENHAM CS 27 CAINSCROSS 17

CAINSCROSS began their new league season with defeat at Cheltenham Civil Service.

Cainscross stuttered in the first 15 minutes and conceded a couple of quick tries and a penalty to put them 17-0 down inside 20 minutes.

All the players will be happy with the fighting spirit that saw Cainscross come fighting right back into the game.

First of all, the direction of play was reversed from a scrum and Will Hawking put Cainscross debutant Charlie Gardener into space.

The winger needed no more invitation and used his impressive speed to crash over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Cainscross then conceded another penalty but before the half was finished they registered their next try.

Winger Tom Mills caught a high ball and off-loaded well to centre Tom Callow.

He then took his opportunity to run, jink and outpace a number of Service defenders on his way to the line for a try converted by Jon Stickler, to make the score 20-12 at half time.

Cainscross made the best possible start to the second half as Gareth Ponsford found a gap and sprinted clear to score.

Service then scored another try to increase their lead to ten before a break from forwards Will Hawking, Sam Mills and Sam Halliday eventually resulted in a Cainscross penalty on the five metre line.

Scrum-Half Laurence Coates seized the moment at the back and darted over for the bonus point try.

Throughout the final 20 minutes of the match Cainscross tried to find a way through the Service defence but ultimately failed to do so, losing 27-17.

Cainscross seconds lost out against Cheltenham Saracens, scoring three tries in the process through centre Chris Grey (2) and winger Sam Waite.
