NEW measures to tackle speeding are set to be launched in Matson.

Police from the Matson and Robinswood Safer Community Team, in consultation with residents, have decided to make traffic offences the main priority for the force.

Speed testing units will be on patrol.

It will be launched in hotspots like Matson Avenue, Reservoir Road and Baneberry Road.

Gloucester City Councillor Kate Haigh (Lab, Matson and Robinswood) said: "Certain parts of Matson are being used as rat runs or for speeding. Because we have open spaces around people think they can speed but there are lots of children and elderly people living here and it is not suitable for speeding at all.

"I absolutely welcome the police doing as much as they can to stop this speeding."

The priority was decided at a meeting of Matson and Robinswood Community Partnership at Matson Baptist Church on Tuesday.

Sharon Clark, from Matson and Robinswood Tenants and Residents' Association also felt the speeding checks were needed.

She said: "There is still a lot of speeding going on and it is really dangerous. It is really good something is being done."

The traffic priority will replace the previous priority targeting antisocial use of mini-motos and mopeds in the area, although police said they will continue to look into this.

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesman said: "We will be working with Gloucestershire Highways to establish whether barriers can be installed in alleyways around Matson to stop riders accessing and taking their bikes along public footpaths."

    “col,
It's not only built up areas that need speed limits. There are no pavements, and people sometimes have to walk along there. There are also cyclists that have to use that road; it's not as if there is an alternative route.

    oggy oggy oop,
Laws are mainly there because some people can't simply behave in a reasonable way. Do you speed along narrow lanes wth no thought for other road users, I wonder?”

“there are lots of non built up areas with 30 mph speed limits, ie, lechampton lane, upton st leonards, but i guess no councellors live on winnycroft lane. so we will have to put up with people legally driving at 60mph past our houses.”

“Oh dear Col, I guess that was your veiled way of saying that Matson residents don't pay tax, was it??

Winnycroft Lane has a 30mph limit up to the junction with Sneedhams Road, which people already ignore - as we've already said. There are a lot of livestock in the fields on this road, and they have been escaping quite a bit recently - the drivers who feel the need to drive at over 40mph on this stretch would come to a very abrupt stop if they hit one of the cows.”

“this once again proves that TiG is happy for the uk to be a police state - police, crime, violence, police, law, authority, control - what an agenda”

“I take it the Matson residents are paying for all the police that will be involved in this. May I suggest the do something about the parking at the Musket roundabout. Also Winneycroft lane has a national speed limit and does not need the 30 mph limit extended. It is not a built up area.”

“it would help if they sorted out the main roads outside Matson so that people didn't need to cut through to get to the St. Barnabas roundabout past all the queueing traffic on finlay road...

anyway, with the recent rash of potholes that's appeared in Matson, it would be rather bumpy speeding through Matson avenue and Baneberry road... Nature's way of telling you you're driving too fast...”

“About time these dangerous law breakers were caught and dealt with.

Not a day goes by when we don't hear about some poor person being killed or seriously injured by a motorist not paying attention or breaking a law.”

“matson resident, i would def agree that the worst offenders are those on the way to the bretheren place. whilst walking my dog at sneedhams they come belting past with no care or thought of pedestrians or children out playing.”

“John, There isn't much point - they still speed along Winnycroft Lane where there is a speed limit.
As people rarely cross the road, there are few accidents, so nothing gets done.
The worst offenders are those on their way to the Brethren meeting place on Matson Lane on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Not sure how people can speed along Matson Ave to be honest - it's packed full of cars and speed bumps, not to mention craterous potholes..!!!”

“winnycroft lane is the worse spot, although part of matson, there is no speed limit from the motorway bridge to sneedhams road, its about time this was changed, this area is part of gloucester. the welcome to gloucester sign and the 30 mph signs need to be at the start of gloucester, on the motorway bridge”
