Stadium funds could score jobs
PUTTING millions of pounds towards Gloucester City Football Club's plans for a new stadium would create employment and contribute towards the regeneration of the city, according to a business owner behind the bid.
Eamonn McGurk, owner of Keyway Gloucester Ltd, which is closely tied to Gloucester City AFC, said if the bid to Gloucestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) was successful, it would bring a big boost to the city.
The LEP has shortlisted five projects to consider for major investment. The projects have all put in bids for its £8.4million Gloucestershire Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), which is designed to help create new jobs and drive economic growth.
Eamonn, who runs the construction equipment hire firm and is also the majority shareholder at the football club, said: "It would be great for Gloucester and for the football club and youth here.

Gloucester City AFC chairman Nigel Hughes added: "We will be working hard on our business plan and look forward to working closely with the Gloucestershire Local Enterprise Partnership in the coming weeks and months."
Other shortlisted projects include regeneration projects East of Lydney and also in Cinderford, which includes plans for Northern Relief Road, as well as further regeneration of the Blackfriars site in Gloucester. Also, new development at Gloucestershire Airport, including the construction of new hangers
Successful projects are expected to be allocated money by April 2013.
The GIIF cash was secured by the LEP from the Government's Growing Places Fund.
