A near-Earth asteroid – called 2012 DA14 – will pass very close to Earth today.

Astronomers estimate that, at its closest, it'll be within the orbit of the moon and even closer than some communications satellites.

You will need a star-chart, a small telescope, and to be a fairly experienced observer to see it, though.

“One hopes the asteroid remains an asteroid ( that is stays in space) and doesn't turn into a meteor (which enters into the atmosphere) otherwise I fear somebody could be in trouble.”

    “ChorltonHardy..............ermmm, wrong Brian.
    Easy mistake to make.....sort of.
Brian May is a keen astronomer, indeed, he bought Sir Patrick Moore's house when he (Sir Patrick) had some financial problems a few years ago.
He then let Sir Patrick live in it rent free.
Great guy Brian, great music too...............hair's a bit dodgy though.
And of course, the God that is Brian Cox, will be glued to his telescope I'm sure, right underneath the closest point to Earth, about 35,500km overhead.”
