Stop notice served on Newent gipsy site
PLANNING officers issued a stop notice at a gipsy site in Newent after finding unauthorised work was taking place.
Residents and members of Southend Lane Action Movement were alerted on Friday morning that construction equipment had been delivered to the field off Southend Lane.
Planning officers visited the site on Friday but could not find any evidence of unauthorised development, but issued the order the following day after revisiting the site.
A spokesman from the district council's planning department said: "Officers found the level of activity went above and beyond what is permissible under the current conditions of the site and a temporary stop order was issued.
"The order prevents any unauthorised development continuing on the site over the next 28 days."
After buying the field off Southend Lane and moving onto the site over a Bank Holiday weekend last year, the gipsies were served with a planning enforcement notice.
They appealed against it which led to a public inquiry which was held in December.
Inspector David Baldock upheld the enforcement notice, but granted planning permission for the gipsies to remain on the site until January 31, 2012.
A representative from SLAM said: "I am told the atmosphere around the site has changed dramatically.
"People walking past have had comments thrown at them through the hedge.
"One person was told that 20 lorry loads of stone had been ordered and that they had been good neighbours before, but won't be any longer."
A member of the gipsy group said they were just filling potholes and they wished to be left alone.

“Jude, the gypsies run rings around the council because they know what they are doing, the council on the other hand, do not.
Everyone is so frightened of being labeled a racist that these type of people get away with it. The reason the gypsies did not apply for planning, is because they knew it would be rejected. Its about time the authorities grew a pair, and dealt with these so called travellers, they are not supposed to be there, so move them on. Now, not in two years time. It comes as no surprise that people have no faith in the system, as it is obviously skewed to protect minorities instead of the law abiding majority.”

“Marcus - The FODDC are having to pay out masses amount of tax payers money in compensation because the planning dept are abusing their authority, remember the case at Westbury where the EO parked his car, well I have heard he has done the same again - to a couple who live on the A48 where a house has been demolished. The Council are trying to keep it hushed up. When the Council Tax goes up, just remember it is to pay for incompetent, bullying Officers at the Council and their nice fat pensions.”
