SCHOOLS will take the brunt of the disruption caused by strike action across the county today.

A total of 142, representing more than half of the county's schools, are due to be closed or partially closed because teachers are not expected to turn up.

Disruption may also affect other public services, including job- centres and driving test centres as public sector workers walk out over planned pension reforms.

Parents across the county have had to make child care arrangements because thousands of children have been told not to attend school.

Members of the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers are striking in protest at changes proposed by the Government to teachers' pensions.

John Pemberthy, secretary of the NUT's Gloucestershire branch, said: "The Government has refused to accept, or openly accept, that the teachers' pension scheme is fair and affordable. It's just not true that the scheme will require an extra injection of cash.

"The Government isn't playing fair and this is why we're on strike.

"It's not only an attack on our terms and conditions, but it's also a tax on our pensions because they're trying to raise money from our pension fund."

He expects hundreds of teachers to join a peaceful rally in Gloucester Park this morning. It will start at 10.30am and will include speeches and protest songs before a picnic lunch at noon.

Gloucestershire police said they were not expecting trouble at the event and did not plan to send extra officers to the area.

The NUT has encouraged teachers not to form picket lines outside schools because it does not want to appear too 'confrontational' at this stage.

Some private schools, including Cheltenham Ladies' College, are likely to be disrupted.

Thousands of workers at Cheltenham's GCHQ are backing strike action being taken by some of their civil service colleagues around the country.

Although GCHQ workers are not allowed to go on strike, staff who are members of the Public and Commercial Services' Union have issued a statement of support.

Caroline Cornell, on behalf of the 2,832 PCS members at GCHQ, said: "They find it ironic that it was a Conservative prime minister who banned trades unions here on grounds of national security, and it is another Conservative prime minister who is so concerned about national security that he thinks it is an acceptable risk to anger GCHQ staff by freezing pay and cutting pensions."

Mark Owen, for the Federation of Small Businesses in Gloucestershire, said he feared millions of pounds would be lost by small firms struggling to cope with the teachers' strike.

With some parents expected to stay away from work to look after their children, he said: "It will be big bucks."

One nursery chain contacted its customers to see if parents wanted to drop off their children today.

But the Busy Bees firm, which has nurseries in Cheltenham and Gloucester, had little response.

People taking driving tests were advised to turn up at the county's three test centres, in Cheltenham and Gloucester, but the Driving Standards Agency could not say whether PCS union member examiners would be on strike or not.

The Department for Work and Pensions said it hoped jobcentres in the county would operate normally. Spokesman Steve Milne said: "Our contingency plans include prioritising our resources so that we can continue to make payments to our customers as normal."
