THE owners of a retired racing greyhound fear a dog who savaged their pet on a canal towpath may strike again – or even bite a child.

Jason and Sarah Smith's pet Graham suffered a 13cm gash when a dog turned on him on the Stroudwater Navigation towpath on Sunday afternoon.

"We have nothing really against the owner but if he is not aware that the dog did that, then they need to be told," said Jason, 33, of Ebley, Stroud.

"There could have been other people walking by and they could have come across those dogs."

Jason was walking their son Jacob, one, in his pushchair, when Graham was approached by two large dogs.

Jason said he held Graham by his collar and the pushchair while the dogs passed.

He did not realise immediately that one of the dogs returned to Graham and took a chunk out of the top of Graham's right-hand back leg from behind, exposing and damaging muscle tissue in a deep wound.

Jason alerted Sarah, who picked them up where the canal runs under the Ebley bypass, and Graham was taken for emergency surgery at Bowbridge Vets in Stroud.

"Although the owner did acknowledge my husband when the two dogs first approached Graham and called the dogs over, it was too late to catch up with him once he'd noticed Graham's wound," said Sarah 33.

Jason said insurance covered the cost of surgery and they are not pursuing the owner for compensation.

"We have no hard feelings against the owner of the dog and realise that it may be the first time the dog has ever caused such an injury, however we want to make him aware of what happened so he can keep the dog on a lead in future to stop it from ever happening again," said Sarah.

"We're also very relieved that our son was strapped in his pushchair at the time and not walking alongside Graham as he likes doing sometimes, otherwise he may have received injuries too."

The couple has not told police because no people were injured.

“The owner of the attacking dog should be tracked down and the dog destroyed simple as it is dangerous and will do it again.”
