Stroud planners to star in BBC TV show
Stroud District Council's planning officers will be under the microscope in the BBC documentary series 'The Planners', which airs on BBC2 over the next few weeks, giving a behind the scenes insight into how they make important decisions affecting the lives of local people.
The series runs at 8pm on Thursdays and this week's episode will be the first to feature the work of the district's planners and the councillor's who make up the council's planning committee.
Phill Skill, head of planning for Stroud District Council said: "The film crew followed us during the wet summer of 2012 to get the inside track on how planners work. Whether it's a household extension or a wind farm we're looking at, the nature of what we do will often put us in the headlines.
"The controversial decisions we are asked to make mean that people tend to have strong opinions about us, so it was a great to get the opportunity to show what really goes on behind the scenes and highlight some of the issues we face."

Over the next few weeks viewers will get to see what goes on behind the scenes as well as seeing planners work on number of different applications. The first application that will feature in this Thursday's episode is the Lemon Fields application for half a dozen houses in the heart of the town of Minchinhampton.
As the eight-part series progresses, the documentary will cover an application for a new wedding venue at Elmore Court, a 'boys and their toys' story at Brimscombe involving a resident with a knack for maintaining large trucks, and in the last episode, the highly controversial application for four wind-turbines in the Berkeley Vale, dismissed by Government inspectors last month.
Councillor Dennis Andrewartha, executive member for planning for Stroud District Council, said: "Making planning decisions is an unenviable job. Applications invariably have supporters and objectors, so we'll always end up upsetting someone. Hopefully this documentary will highlight the complex issues our planners and councillors face and help demystify the process."

“We have always found with SDC, when it comes to planning permission for work on your house, that you get a quick and fair response. As for snide comments on housing deveopments, they approved planning permission for 21 affordable houses to be built in an orchard just around the corner from us. There has also been more houses built in the village just below us. So not not always away from Stroud.”

“The one last week featuring Cheltenham planners was genuinely shocking. A bunch of grumpy cardigan-wearing busy-bodies (average age, 70) who have the power - apparently on a whim - to ruin people's health and happiness through refusing sensible decisions and enforcing others. Madness! I shall watch the Stroud one with interest. So shocked CBC allowed the show to go out - showed them in a terrible light - can only assume they didn't see the final edit.”
