Student buys pensioner mobility scooter
KIND-HEARTED Hartpury College student Abbie Strong has raised enough cash to buy an elderly man a mobility scooter.
The 22-year-old, who has just completed her course in veterinary science, organised a marathon 12-hour football match in a bid to raise money to buy the scooter for Kenneth Selway.

helping hand: Hartpury College student and fundraiser Abbie Strong with pensioner Kenneth Selway on his new scooter.
Mr Selway lives near the entrance to Hartpury College and Abbie used to see him struggling to walk down the street every morning when she arrived.
She said: "I used to see him struggling, and then I started to pick him up to give him a lift – I couldn't just drive past him.

"I thought I had to do something, so I organised the sponsored game."
Last month, eight teams took part in a tournament at Gloucester Park and £300 was raised which funded not only the scooter, but a shed to put it in too.
"He absolutely loves it and it should make a big difference to his life," added Abbie.

“So what this story dosent say is the reason it was at glos park and not hartpury.....pretty much cause hartpury didn't want to host it...but they will take all the good press, tad unfair.”

“Well done Abbie ! People can see for themselves just what a huge difference these types of mobility items to a person's quality of life .
Hopefully the cost of such items will come down, as they can be very expensive ...... some costing in the region of £4k _ £5k, and some even more .”

“That is fantastic and well done to all who helped the old fellow. As for our Government, they are the ones who should be helping our elderly, but of course, would rather help fund corrupt 'Governments' and worthless causes inside/outside of the UK.”

“Well done Abbie. You deserve more than just a short story in a local rag. I hope one of the nationals picks up on the story.”

“@ Douglasknows, White knight is stating that it is a wonderful thing that she has done, but pointing out that the government does not do enough to look after our elderly. If they did, she would have not needed to do this. Although I am glad that she did.”

“I say, let Abbie have a "Caring for the elderly" award. After all, this gentleman was struggling and Abbie knew something had to be. Well done to you, and well done to all who contributed to the event to raise the money.”

“I think this young lady is amazing. She saw the gentleman struggling and did something about it.
However, my view is that people should not be left to "struggle". If you need an aid to make life better, then it should be freely available. This government does not spend money wisely and this is the result.”
