Supply teachers in Gloucestershire could lose out under new education pay system
CHANGES to teacher pay regulations could put supply teachers out of a job if they are not given the right training.
That is the view of Lynis Bassett, managing director of Classpeople, a company based in Cheltenham which organises Continuous Professional Development courses in Gloucestershire.
Trainers met supply teachers in Rowanfield Junior School this morning to put them through their paces as Education Secretary Michael Gove’s new performance-related pay system kicks in.
Teachers around the county are set to strike on October 17, in protest against the new pay scale, which will require teachers to present performance reports at the end of the year.

Ms Bassett said: “Supply teachers provide vital cover for absence and sick leave for permanent staff. If they do not have access to the latest professional training and development, they risk slipping down the pay scales, or worse still, losing out on work opportunities completely.
“Each CPD session provides teachers with the skills necessary for them to develop their careers further.
“I think it’s a big change, one of the biggest in our education system for a long time.
“It gives an opportunity for our younger qualified teachers lower down the pay scale to earn what they are worth instead of taking time before they can increase their pay.”
The director, who was a teacher for more than 11 years, said the new pay system will help younger teachers achieve a higher pay if they can perform, but warned that supply teachers could be left behind under the reforms.
Jade Farley, 27, a supply teacher waiting to go into a full-time role, said she could understand both sides of the argument.
She added: “I understand there are teachers that will now have to produce performance results.
“There will be younger teachers just coming out of university who will have the motivation to be subject leaders and to keep going and earn at a higher level.”
