VICTIMS of domestic fires will be given emotional and practical support as part of a new partnership between the fire service and British Red Cross.

Red Cross volunteers will work with Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service to respond to incidents from 5pm to 7am during weekdays, and 24 hours on weekends.

They will offer practical help, advice and comfort to residents when needed.

Chief fire officer Jon Hall said: "Our crews see first-hand the damage that domestic fires cause across the county, not just to homes but to people's lives."

"This is a great opportunity to work with volunteers who are able to give the emotional support residents sometimes need, often while we are still firefighting. I hope this new alliance goes from strength to strength."

Both groups will be signing a statement of strategic alliance to formalise the new partnership.

The Red Cross is looking for more volunteers, and can be contacted on 0117 3012619, or dspencer@redcross.org.uk.
