SHOCKED staff arrived to work at a Cheltenham shop – to find what appeared to be a bullet hole in the window.

Simon Butland, who owns Pittville Bathrooms in Prestbury Road, arrived at 9am on Saturday to open up, only to find the perfectly round hole in his main shop window.

Mr Butland is confident the hole was caused by a pellet from an air rifle.

He said police told him there was nothing they could do.

"I went outside to look at the hole in the window and thought it was very bizarre," said Mr Butland. "I looked to see if there was a rock or a pebble on the floor, but there wasn't.

"I called the police and they said they were not going to come out because there wasn't anything to look at.

"We have checked the CCTV, but didn't find anything on it."

Employees have been hunting for the air rifle pellet in the shop to no avail.

He believes he was lucky not have any of his stock inside the shop damaged in the incident.

"It was so close to damaging some expensive kit in the window," he said.

"We haven't fallen out with anybody."

Showroom manager Helen Carter said she could not believe it when she saw the hole.

"I was shocked," she said. "It is not something you expect to see. It is obviously a bullet hole."

A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said: "We dealt with this incident over the telephone having evaluated the circumstances because there was no evidence to go off. There was very little we could do.

"We would ask for anyone with any information about this incident to come forward and we will follow up any lines of inquiry."

Anyone with information should contact the police by calling 101, quoting incident number 125 of March 9.

“It's no big deal....there was a 'bullet-hole' for 20 years in the window of the old launderette called 'Wash Tub' (I think) in Suffolk Road near Tivoli.”

“Broken glass shows two kinds of fractures: primary, first-made fractures, and secondary, subsequent fractures. Primary fractures are radial. They look like the spokes of a wheel as they radiate outward from the point of impact. Secondary fractures are concentric. They form a series of broken circles, or arcs, around the point of impact.
Radial fractures show up on the surface opposite to the one where the fracturing blow or pressure was applied.
With the quality of the picture published it looks a bit like the impact may have come from either side, but even if the glass was broken from the inside the insurance company will pay out.....”
