Suspended Gloucester City Council chief Phillip Staddon departs

Suspended council chief Phillip Staddon has left as part of a cost cutting plan.

Gloucester City Council said this morning that its Corporate Director of Regeneration, Mr Staddon, has decided to leave the council. He joined the Council in 1999 and has served the council in a variety of roles. 

He was suspended in October over allegations that he was linked to an investigation in to nepotism at the council. It's an issue that has seen three dismissals and a resignation, though his position remained apparently unresolved until today.

As one of the council's directors, he earned £85,000 a year and it's understood he is leaving with a severance payment of around £100,000.

The council is shedding a directorship as part of cost cutting plans in the upcoming budget for 2013/14.

For the last five years he has held the post of Corporate Director of Regeneration leading on regeneration and property matters.

Phillip Staddon said: "After 13 enjoyable and rewarding years at the Council, I was keen to explore taking on some new and different challenges in the development and regeneration sector. My decision has coincided with a time when the Council needs to make significant cuts to senior management to achieve budget savings.

For all of these reasons I have decided to leave the Council. It was a difficult decision and not made lightly. I will remain Gloucester based and will take a keen interest in Gloucester's continued progress. It is a great city."

Councillor Paul James, Leader of Gloucester City Council said: "Phil has served Gloucester well for more than a decade and has played a major role in the City's regeneration, particularly at St Oswald's Park, the Docks and Gloucester Quays.

"More recently, he has led the successful negotiation of the development agreement with Stanhope for the Kings Quarter scheme and led the Council's accommodation review. We wish Phil well for the future and thank him for the significant contribution he has made to the work of the Council and the regeneration of the City."
